i've been loyal custumer of seagate, but i want to know how other brands performed now adays before buying my harddrive.

    can somebody recommend ?

i just need reliability and speed and overall performance.

price is not an issue (ecxept for SD :) )

Samsung won't be an option as it's 12.5mm thick, these 500GB hdd's should be 9.5mm thick as the standard of 2.5" HDD's are :) I think Hitachi has one that's 12.5mm thick also of those 500GB. They won't fit most notebooks..

WD is recommended by many, has good performance, almost like a 7200rpm 320GB HDD. AFAIK the WD is the only one that's been reviewed of those standard 2.5" 500GB yet.

Same diff in real world performance. 7200RPM drives offer faster seek times, how fast data can be found and read. Even if the throughput of the 5400RPM drives is close, the will seem slower due to the seeks times.

Well I agree with most of it, except the Samsung HM500LI is 9.5mm high.

The WD5000BEVT is faster, has lower power consumption and stays cooler though.

But WD3200BEKT is stil faster, especially in multi tasking situations.

You probably got it from Fujitsu and Hitachi who have both released 12.5mm high 500GB drives.

And yes Samsung HM500LI is a 3 platter drive. Quite a job by Samsung to squeeze it in a 9.5mm form factor. Theoretically they could release a 750GB drive now, I wonder if they will.

If you can wait, buy Seagate 7200.4 500GB drive. It would be the fastest and largest hd in the planet. The drive should be available after the first week of January.

Samsung's is a 9.5mm 500gb hard drive. It just happen to have to worst power consumption of all the 500gb 2.5" hard drives....

Yeah, we figured that out :)

I just thought it was that because of the 3platters i think. Anyways as you say, that samsung drive is nothing to have anyways hehe as it's louder, warmer and have a bad power consumption :)

. . Hi - at least one user is reporting noise issues/possible firmware incompatibility between a late 2008 MPB & the WD5000BEVT.

Suggest you fit the Seagate 5400.6 500 GB or await their 7200.4 500GB - Apple use & presumably have reasons to prefer Seagate/Hitachi 2.5" HDDs.

    They'll use any brand.

However if they are offering 500GB 7200rpm in January you can be sure it's Seagate.

No: . . . Apple do not use WD for their 2.5" HDDs . . . come to think of it, I don't believe they use WD at all now.

Apple have very demanding requirements re: power/noise/sleepstates & are accustomed to working with Hitachi, Seagate, & to a lesser extent Fujitsu in the development of Apple-specific HDD firmware.

Folks have had firmware-centered hassles when fitting retail Fujitsu & WD HDDs to Apple laptops, so I generally recommend Hitachi or Seagate.
