    Hey guys,

Looking to upgrade the HD on my SONY AW but can't decide what speed the HD ought to be.

Right now I am running on a 320gb 7200rpm. I'm already at about 68% capacity. My lp is hella slow so I plan on upgrading this week.

Anyway I want to get a 500gb hd, but was told the 7200rpm would run to hot? loud?

My Budget is $150 or so.
I need something with plenty of space and fast!

    Thanks!

You have a 7200rpm now. Is that too hot or loud for you? Both are dual platter drives so just because one has more storage space than the other isn't going to make a difference. Personally I don't think 7200rpm drives are worth it for a little bump in speed but that is my choice.

no, I don't mind the 7200 I've got now. Never looked at it like that.

Didnt really grasp what you said about the dual platter drives...
Are you saing there is no point going forward with the upgrade?

    ...slightly perplexed. Lol

If you need the capacity, then go for it, but don't expect much performance gain.

I'd consider an external backup drive unless you run like multiple partitions for every OS installed on your drive. Take the load of the internal using the external and in case of failure you have the external.

I meant the higher capacity drive is pretty much like your current drive but with more capacity.

Max out the memory instead if you haven't done it yet. Try Diskeeper too.

Get the WD6400BEVT. 640GB and probably the fastest hard drive available at the moment.

You could also get the 750GB or 1TB WD because your AW does support it. But those are three platter drives and it will probably not be as fast as the 640GB.

If you want 500GB 7200rpm wait for the Hitachi Travelstar 7K500.
