    Hi~

I was hearing some noise about hitachi and (I think) samsung releasing 500gb 12cm notebook hard drives. Since then, nothing.

    Anyone know anything?

There's a few Asus machines that are using Hitachi's non-standard height unit. I think the Samsung drive is of more conventional dimensions, but it isn't out on the market yet.

Samsung say their 500GB 2.5" HDD will be the standard 9.5mm (3/8") thickness and will be available in the first half of 2008. The Hitachi 500GB could well be here sooner but uses the 12.5mm (1/2") form factor which won't fit into many notebooks.

Both manufacturers say they are using 3 platters. I will be intrigued to see how Samsung squeeze the extra platter into the standard thickness drive and I wonder why this move to expand capacity wasn't done sooner.
