I downloaded hdd tune and I let it do an error scan, when I cam back it said critical tempature 55c. It was 48 before I started. Is that normal is is my laptop going to die?

Some hard drive`s get quite hot when they are doing a lot, like scanning for viruses or defraging your harddrive, so the temperature rise is normal though 55c is bit high, but as long as it`s under 60c you should be fine.

Does hdtune smart info show any error warnings, also what make of hdd do you have.

EDIT : Also a quick way to check too see if you temperature sensor is accurate, is to boot your notebook after it has been switched off for a few hours and then quickly check the hdd temp against your rooms temperature, they should be almost the same if the hdd temp is reading correct.

55C is too high... its shouldn't even be 48C.. but due to hp bad desgin for hard drives covers , the hard drives get bad ventillation.. best idea is to use a notebook cooling pad which blows air directly into hard drive vents.. its drops my HDD temps a lot..

Anything below 60 is fine according to most hard drive spec sheets but anything over 50 is high for a drive and isn't good, especially for longevity. Ideally it should be in the high 30s/low 40s and go into the high 40s during high activity.
