Do you guys think my heatsink just broke contact with my CPU or thermal compound? It is all stock components but even undervolted and this happened when i switched from max battery (800MHz) to Max Performance to watch a 1080p YouTube (2.4GHz max multiplier). The GPU doesn't heat up nearly that easily so i can rule out that contact is bad with the GPU as well as the CPU, but do you guys think this is just dryed up thermal compound? When i first got this and undervolted the CPU to the lowest possible voltages, max ORTHOS CPU temp was only 74C, now when i play GTA 4 the max is probably 88-92C, i also feel the heat is hindering performance in gaming. Mind you despite this it hasn't shut down ever while gaming, and like i said the GPU stays independently cool (max of 74 also in stress test).
What do you guys think this is? Just a general loss of contact with the heatsink?
Edit: i forgot to mention that the 56C to 70C figure is over the course of 1 second... instantly 70C from 56C.

yeah sounds about right, i recently had a Dell vostro for a week that was doing the same thing with 1080p hd movies, x264 versions, but it would jump up to 80c-82c so i took it apart and took the heatsink off and found most all of the heatsink grease had melted off. I cleaned it off with electrical contact cleaner and put arctic silver 5 and it ran max 60c on videos and idled in the 30's, significant improvement.
i'm about to do that in a few days with my XPS i just bought from a friend. -

I should sue Rockstar games for this... since i was playing GTA 4 heavily.

I'm running toothpaste on my pieced together Intel E2180 desktop and it idles at 26C, and I'm not even kidding. As long as the computer is on Everest is running and telling me the temps and I haven't really stressed it but I've not seen it get over 35-36C! -
yeah toothpaste rocks.. but you'll have to change it faster than you think.

True! I'd say after 5-6hrs. (my toothpaste anyway) -

Could you not turn toothpaste into a fully fledged thermal paste just by adding a binding agent that does not evaporate as fast as water, like petroleum jelly, or just motor oil.

Why mess around with that when you can get good paste for $5?
-
but what effect might the binding agent have on the properties as a whole?
edit: much better point by moral hazard

i would get proper thermal paste... spending $5 is not worth killing ur $1000 laptop.

True, but i wish it was sold in conventional stores... I checked Staples to see if they might just have some in stock or stuff that they don't put on shelves, but nope.. and among that i discovered that they are selling a 6200 "OC edition" for 100 bucks CAN, which is outrageous. That place is so overpriced, and a 250 GS is 300 bucks CAN...

Get some real thermal compound, you cheapskates.

Just start a WTB thread in the marketplace. I'm sure someone will post some diamond paste at a good price to you. You might want to PM forum user "IC Diamond". He might be able to send a sample to you.

newmegg.ca , tigerdirect.com and other online places should have it cheaply.
56C to 70C upon viewing video, normal? I didn't think so
