I'm trying to decide between a Dell Inspiron 15R and XPS 15. A contributing factor in my decision is battery life. Only the XPS 15 has an option to "upgrade" the battery to a 90 whr 9-cell over the standard 60 whr 6-cell. As someone who is buying their first laptop, and doing so for school (so it will be my primary computer for the next 5 years and needs to be portable), I'm lost.

What are the real differences? How much will it increase my battery life by, if at all. The only figures I've seen are that the 9-cell adds half a pound in weight. Also, would the 9-cell increase the bulk in my XPS 15?

X Whr is how much power the battery can hold.

A 90 whr battery will give you 50% more battery life over a 60 whr one.

They are usually a bit larger (but not always) and heavier.

with the addition of 3 cells, the battery will be larger...
and like meaker said, The 9 cell will offer a 50% boost in battery life.
Working on the fact that each cell is a lithium cell they would have a capacity of 2700mAh giving you the 90whr figure 9 cells*2700mAh*3.7v=~90whr.
