When I customize my notebook on Dell's website, they don't give me an option for a 64 bit windows vista, but they do give me the option for 4 GB of RAM.

Is Dell just being stupid, or do they automatically give me a 64 bit os when I want 4GBs?

They are being stupid. They are also smart, and over charge for RAM (see RAM Deals thread).

However, you can get the 64bit OS from Dell if you want it.

I'd call to ask. But it wouldn't be exactly stupid to give you 4GB with a 32 bit OS. You will still be able to use the majority of it, and it will all run in dual channel instead of mixed mode.

I was told if you get Vista Home Premium you should contact Microsoft to get the 64 bit install disk. They will charge you shipping but thats it, so less than $10. If you get Vista Ultimate the disk includes 32 and 64 bit.
