if this is a macbook get the 650m with 1gb. most games should run better with the 650m even with 512mb though apart from maybe high res when it may struggle.

Indeed 650m with 1gb is much more advisable, here is comparison with the 1gb and 512mb 650 and the 6770m 1gb

    2012 Retina MacBook Pro - Extreme 3D

the 6770m aint no slouch, but the 650m is clearly more powerful

If gaming is a primary factor in your purchase decision, do not buy a Mac. There are plenty of cheaper Windows machines that are just as capable, if not more so.

Meh its ok. Thanks for the help tho. Running starcraft on high with 30+ fps is great for me. This is a massive upgrade from my lenovo x100e.

Also, for the extreme gaming test the testers where on a super high resolution. If I playedmthose games on native resolution, will I see a fps boost?

yes, but the games now are consuming more memory as you read in the article. But its a small ecosystem of games we have to wait for a proper review.

I would say wait a bit more.

I wouldnt say underpowered. Overpriced? Yes. Also its a giant marketkng scam. Once students use a mac, do you think that they would go back to windows? No. My school and apple probably made a deal of some sorts. dat lol.

Cool good luck with your purchase. Perhaps you can ask your school to pay the extra money the mac costs over a similarly specced pc!

Sounds pretty ridiculous that they expect all their students to shell out huge sums of money for a computer with no choice in the matter!! Doesn't sound very democratic lol

I need to get a macbook. No pc sadly. I am going to game and use my mac for school. Im torn between the amd 6770m with 1gb or the nvidia 650m with 512mb of vram. Which is better for gaming on a 1440x900 resolution?

Uhh I'm pretty sure the 650M is better... But 512MB of video RAM may bite. Would you mind scaling down resolutions to 1280x720 for games?

Will there be ugly black lines on the side? I dont mind lines horizontally only virtically. Either way im upgrading from a lenovo thinkpad x100e. I used to run games on lowest with 800x600 rez. I really hate the vertical lines.

It depends on the game. Some will stretch and some won't. I think the problem would be avoided by changing the desktop resolution of the MacBook to 1280x720 as you loaded up a game though. I don't have any macs to try this on for you though, you could probably contact the Apple guys.

As to the core itself 650m is way better than 6770 whose counter part should be 630m, isnt it?

Which games are you planning to run? Either of those two graphics cards should be fine for running most games at 1440x900. The 512MB Vram may cause problems for games that stream texture files, so depending on the games you want to run, the 1GB 6770 might be a better choice for Skyrim, for example.

The 6770m is faster than my 5830m, which runs just about every game at 1920x1080 with all settings maxed except anti aliasing. The only games that don't run well at 1080p for me are Tribes Ascend and Witcher 2. DXHR, Skyrim, ME3, Arkham City all ran just fine.

I get 40-60 nearly everywhere, except it drops down below 30 in Markarth if I'm standing in certain spots. In interiors it's more like 50-60. I've disabled anti-aliasing (MSAA) and I'm using FXAA instead, which in my view looks about as good as 2x or 4xMSAA.

I'm using a few texture mods as well as the official texture pack, and these haven't really affected framerate at all. I've noticed that ASIS and Occupy Skyrim reduce the framerate when there is a massive battle with 30-40 NPCs onscreen at once.

Yeah couldnt you just put OSX on a regular notebook PC (as Im assuming theyre just forcing you to use some OSX-only software)?

I believe OSX on notebooks is legal now, and allowed to be discussed here last time I checked the new rules.

This is something I'd like to know as well.
It doesn't make sense for a school to force students into getting a Mac.
There's a difference if you are working in software that works on Mac only... but for that, there's a pretty high chance that any software made for Mac will probably exist for Windows (its essentially the other way around that is usually the issue) - except that if the software is provided by the school and they only have a Mac version, then yes, I can definitely see how they can force students into Mac territory.
