Would any 2.5 inch internal SATA HDD work in a Dell 1720?

When I ordered my system only 5,400rpm HDD's were offered for the 1720...although a 7,200rpm drive was available for the 1420 and 1520, go figure.

I've called Dell tech support and sales and can not get an answer why the 1720 is the only model in the new Inspiron line that does not offer a 7,200rpm drive and they have told me that Dell does not yet offer a compatable 7,200 replacement drive.

    Any thoughts ?

A 7200rpm is compatible with a 1720 alright. I'm going to upgrade it too.

I was looking at a 160gb Seagate Momentus 7200.2, but still open to suggestions as long as it will work in the 1720

If I do decide on the Seagate 7200.2, is it worth it to pay the extra for the model with the G-Force Protection ?

If I replace the existing 5400rpm drive in the 1720 with a new 7200 drive by cloning the two then sawapping them...will Vista recognize the new hardware or will the system lock up upon booting and require additional actions on my part ?
