I'm buying the Sony VAIO VGN-CS215J/W and it only carries the 5400 hard drive with 250G. I've been told that a 7200 will run MUCH faster and it isn't too expensive. Is this an appropriate upgrade? What is a decent brand?

err im not sure its going to be as fast as you think. It probably will be a bit faster for accessing files and you may boot up faster but Im not quite sure how fast is MUCH faster =)

Western Digital, Hitachi, Seagate are all good brands for hard drives.

What's the brand in the sony atm?

It aint gonna be that MUCH faster, but it is gonna be faster. A normal 250GB 5400 drive today runs at about 50MB/s a new 320GB 7200 runs at around 70MB/s and the new 500GB 7200rpm runs at around 80MB/s. So up to ~60% faster.
