Hi,
I have been wondering which one of these should I get for mass storage for my new laptop (Defiance III). I heard that the 2.5" Firecuda is using a 5400 RPM drive so will the cache make up for it or will the Sata III 7200 RPM drive still be better?
PS: I will be getting a 250GB SSD along with the drive.

SSHDs aren't really worth - I've used a WD Black 1TB 2.5" SSHD - it was barely faster than a normal 5400RPM drive. Either save money and get a normal HDD or go straight for an SSD. The middle ground is garbage.

Of course, if you need the space, just get a 250GB SSD and a 1-2TB normal HDD like a WD Blue 7200Castdeath97 likes this. -

@Castdeath97 SSHD performs the same for data storage as HDD. 850 EVO are very expensive; I suggest adding $30-40 and getting a used 960GB/1TB MLC drive, e.g. Crucial/Micron M500.

I'm currently using 500GB MX200 mSATA and 1TB Hitachi 7200. I'm pretty satisfied, but I still need more space. I'm looking at this exact FireCuda myself. It might not be up there with the 7K1000, but it has double the space, add to that there's NO 7200RPM 2TB drive and the math gets easier. If you need the sheer storage space, HHDs are still unbeatable when it comes to price. There's also the thing with wasting resources - why buying SSD, if you don't need fast storage? Make your mind how big of an SSD you need and start from there. For my needs the 500GB can fit everything that I need to load faster, has 15% over-provisioning and still has empty space. I already said about my storage drive - I'm trying to download the internet on a disk

@triturbo HDD/SSHD kill battery life, restrain your mobility while operating. It might not be a problem for some, though.

I have the firecuda 2tb. It's much faster than the HDD I replaced it with...and I have not noticed the battery drain any faster. I recommend them for someone who wants speed and storage for sure. This is first hand experience. NOT hear say.
If you watch youtube videos comparing speeds, that's exactly the results I have too. I have an intel SSD, fast but no storage, I have my 2 TB firecuda and western digital blue 500gb.
The SSD and SSHD are very close in terms of speed for computing...games would be different I am suspecting. But...I don't game on my laptop.JAnguita likes this.
