    7200 rpm drive: bus powered?

    just curious if i can run a 7200 rpm external usb2.0 drive bus powered? (as in no external power supply)

    Yes it can, but it may require dual USB port use under load (as opposed to running the external entirely on one port). ie; data/power+power

    how can i know for sure? is it at all drive-model dependant? or maybe laptop dependant?

    Both, as not all 7200 drives and USB controllers are created equal. If the drive shuts down or causes a disc error under load, then it is likely not receiving enough power from the data USB line.
