Hello people of NBR again! I am looking for a storage hard drive for my upcoming laptop that can help laptop battery life and is durable. I was looking at the Samsung Spinpoint m8 and it looks awesome, but I just need a little more input. Thanks a bunch!![]()

For 750GB, i'd get a hitachi 7K750 if you plan to install any programs on it.

I've owned the Scorpio Black 750 GB for over a year now, been going great.
-
EDIT: Seems like prices have changed since i last checked a couple of weeks ago and i'm having a harder time finding the 7K750 prices lower than the scorpio black so disregard the comment about prices. Hitachi was bought by seagate and if the momentus 750GB is like the 7K750 then i'd say the momentus is worth it. If this is gonna be your OS drive, then a momentus XT might not be a bad idea either, bu i wouldn't get one for data storage. -
Thanks so much for your input guys! The drive I'm looking for is primarily for data storage (I plan to use dual mSATAs for primary). So in terms of having a quiet HDD, I should check out the 7k750?

*hitachi was bought by WD, not seagate. That would explain the price inflation to scorpio black levels.

I really haven't noticed how noisy the 750 GB Scorpio Black it, but maybe I'm not bothered by it.

I have another quick question. Is 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm better for a storage drive (with ssd as primary)? I want to preserve as much battery life as possible. And would the 5400rpm make less noise/revving sounds?
-
it'll be quieter, more power efficient, but slightly slower.
for a storage drive in a laptop, 5400rpm is probably preferred. -
I believe a 5400 rpm hard drive would be a better choice if you are doing just storage.
I have a 7200 rpm scorpio black for storage and I like to transfer files back in forth and the speed of transfer the scorpio black provides is something I value. -
Thanks guys
I might look into the Samsung spinpoint m8 or the suggested Hitachi 7k750.

I got the WD 750GB 7200rpm today as a secondary storage drive (SSD primary as well) and it vibrates a lot in my Vaio. On a desk is it too noisy for me but other people may have different experiences with their notebooks. I'm now looking at the WD Scorpio Blue 500GB and other popular 5400rpm drives - would they definitely be quieter than what I have now? Hope I'm not hijacking your thread. Thanks

Yes. Look at a 1TB 5400rpm drive though. It doesn't cost a whole lot more and you can never have too much space for a storage drive.
