Gals and Guys,
I have read where a 1705 user swears hes getting his 7900GS to idle at 57C?!! With no fans!! He is an x Go7800 owner, so am I. Again, these temps are at idle with only XP running, no apps.
Now my 7900GS takes about 30 minutes to climb up (from cold) to approximately 78C before both fans kick on, then temp drops to 68C, rinse and repeat. When OC this happens faster, but I'm back to stock for testing.
So, what about the rest of you? Do I have a hot running 7900GS before I call Dell? I ask because I had the impression most of us 7900GS owners were in the same temperature range?
Thanks for your time!

How to know GPU temp ??
-
First, there can be some difference between running temps even between chips of the same type. That's likely no more than a few degrees though. Second, occasionally the temperature monitor can be off, giving you invalid results. I've seen up to 20C difference, although I don't know how common this issue is on notebooks.
Are you both using the same notebook model? The airflow is a major factor, and some models might allow better air circulation than others. GPU's tend to run hot in any case though, and for a high-end GPU running in a notebook, I'm not terribly surprised to see ~80C idle temperatures.
In any case, 78C isn't a problem for the notebook. if it's too noisy or uncomfortable hot, it's obviously a problem, but there's no risk of hardware failure or overheating. -
Thanks guys, but I'm looking to hear from 7900GS owners please, as quoted "just the temperatures mam, just the temperatures"

With a 530/550 OC, my idle is a steady 70C without fans on (this is after 30 min of sitting in 25C ambient). I don't feel like flashing back to stock so I can't really tell you my stock temps.

Overnight, it idles between 74-75C without fans out. I guess you can think of this as "all day".
I used the NVTemp logger to monitor temps overnight and it just hovered at that temp, so I assumed the fans didn't kick on. -
OK, thanks for your time. It sounds like your GPU is running a tad cooler than mine.
Cheers! -
With my fans on slow at all times, I idle between 48 and 51 degrees and I never go above 75 with load, and that's with stock clocks.
Sounds like the guy with the low temps and no fans cannot correctly read temps. That is SUCH a huge difference than other people. His software must be off... -
Mines overclocked a bit and i have the fans set to run at least on slow at all times and i idle at about 51. Gaming I go up to about 71.
-
Mind you that my temps are with an ambient temp of 25-26C and AS5 applied (over 200 hours since application).
-
i oc'd mine to 480/1100 and it's averaging 47C. During Mark05/06 test, it reached around 65C.
BTW, that's with both fans on slow, and the targus chill mat thing. -
My fans are just set on slow, and my GPU is at 49C. Sometimes it goes to 52, then comes back. On gaming, I set the fans to fast before I open the game, and it never gets above 70C.

While idling with my fans cranked to maximum and a cooler pad underneath, the lowest I ever got was 49C (72C load with OC). With no fans on, the temp will increase quickly - idle or no. It's important to note that the difference between fans "low" and "off" is nearly indistinguishable - at least on mine - but it makes a large temperature difference.
I use an app called i8KfanGUI which is written specifically to read temps and control fans in our Dell laptops. By default (or error), the program reads the 7800 10C cooler than it actually is (you can verify by comparing i8K to the nVidia control panel). I can believe a sustained 67C idle without a fan for a little while, I suppose... maybe if it was a cold room. Curious. -
No different from first card and they, also, changed out the fans! I gave them an "A" for effort.
My 7900 will creep up and kick the fans on just like my old 7800GO, but, it takes a bit longer of course.
So yes, count me a big fan -no pun- of I8kfan! -
My 7900GS GPU temp would climb up to 78 degrees when fans would kick in and cool it down a bit. I use i8kfan now. I let the card to slowly get to 72 degrees and then put the GPU fan on slow. If your goal is to keep the temperature below 65 degrees (or so) you would have to leave the GPU fan on. The temperature increases from 55-57 to 65 w/o the fan on in seconds. 65-72 takes a while. Cooling down from 72 to 65 is very quick, 65 and less takes much longer.

Very well put and just as my two cards have performed!
