they are both great high-end videocards.

the 7950GTX is the best DX9
the 8700M GT is the best DX10 (for now)

both perform near same... but the 7950GTX is slightly faster

so either choice would be fine and easily last for at least 3 years

That might be a long wait.. at least a couple of more months. the 8800 is yet to be announced as a mobile card, and apart from speculation that it would be a MXM III slot card, there's nothing to go by.

If you have the money for it and a little more time, and if you want a mean gaming rig, then I would wait just a bit more time, as Nvidia is supposed to relaease mobile 8800's quite soon. The 8800M GT (or whatever it may be called) is going to be considerably more powerful than either the 8700 or the 7950.

(Edit: seems like the previous poster and I disagree, and I he is correct that 8800s haven't been announced yet, but they should soon be, and availability should come not long after if things are as usual, so by a bit mroe time it might be 2 maybe 3 months, but I do still think it wiil be worth it if you want the performance)

the 8800M should make its appearance by year's end.

According to Nvidia, they seem to be optimistic to say that it would be out by late Fall... but I am not that optimistic.
