    Hello,
I recently purchased a T420s (dont have it yet) and am looking to upgrade the HDD. Please can you recommend 7mm SSDs. I know for sure that the Intel SSDs are 7mm (once the spacer is removed). Any others ?
How about maintaining a list of 7mm SSDs (search didnt reveal any) ?

    Thank you in advance.

You can fit 9.5mm SSD's in there too, (you know that, right?).

From the sounds of it, unless you remove the casing, or otherwise change it from a 9.5 mm to a 7 mm drive, no, you can't. The Intel just happens to be a 7 mm drive (with a spacer that makes it 9.5 mm).

I may be really tired reading your post. But i don't understand what the problem is?

Normal(standard) 2.5" drives are 9.5mm. So what's the problem, why doesn't it work with a intel 9.5mm SSD?

The OP is asking for a list of 7 mm drives because the T420s is listed as only taking 7 mm SSD drives (although I was also confused and thought we were talking about the x220, which only takes 7 mm drives period. Not as sure if the T420s is the same, or if the 7 mm restriction is only on SSDs). Thus, a regular 9.5 mm SSD won't fit in the T420s. The Intel, however, is a 7 mm drive with a spacer that makes it 9.5 mm. My original "you can't" was to Tilleroftheearth who had stated that you can put in 9.5 mm SSDs, period. I'm saying that you can't put in 9.5 mm SSDs into a T420s unless you can convert them into (effectively) 7 mm SSDs.

7 mm is not a standard size.

T420 should, by default, support 9,5 mm and that'is why intel is installing the spacer to make their drives compatible with the 9,5 mm bays.

7 mm seems to be about as much of a standard as 12.5 (see the Hitachi Z5K500, posted to notebookreview.com back in December here). And we're talking about the T420 _s_, which apparently only has a 7 mm regular HDD bay (link here).

Hmm. Very weird. I have never seen a laptop having less than 9,5 mm HDD bay.

7mm is sorta the new 1.8" drives that my T410s uses, makes it tough also to get SSDs as the smaller ones (X18m vs X25m) is more expensive. :(

I can confirm that even some regular T420 have 7mm hitachi with spacer. It's better than 1,8", but we have to wait for more drives avaible on the market.
For now I can se only Intel SSD, and Hitachi & Seagate HDD with maximum capacity of 320 GB (7200 RPM).

More about Lenovo - tabook and slbook say about T420s, X220, X220 tablet, e420s (and probably e220s) having only 7mm space for disk.

OP, the only "choice" that I'm aware of right now is Intel's 320 series and older X25-M/V series.

Thanks ebolamonkey3 - I ended up buying the Intel 320.

@sml - I was looking at this too, but never got a confirmation on the 7mm mod from anyone. Price-wise, the C300 was my first choice.
    Thank you.

There is an issue with 7mm vs 9.5mm, if the mother board is designed for a 7mm drive then a 9.5mm drive will not fit because the SATA connectors are in different places and you would not be able to put the drive bay cover back on.

You can potentially remove the housing from an SSD drive and it will fit, BUT, you may encounter electrical interference without the shielding provided by the SSD housing.

    Crucial M4 series.

They are 9.5mm drive with a removable spacer that turns it into a 7mm drive.

Go read about this in the Lenovo/IBM subforum, where people have put this matter into practice for months now. Better ratio of practice vs. pontification.

Yep, here's the thread in question. You may need to dig around for a bit, though, since the OP doesn't seem to be maintaining the list anymore.
