hey so are 8 bit and 6 bit EDP displays compatible at all? i have an LVDS driver board that has a switch for 6 bit vs 8 bit and there are also differences in the pinout. just wondering if its possible to drive an 8 bit EDP display with a 6 bit signal somehow.

No. I'd guess the "8bit", if it really is there, involves dithering. There's no way to get a 6bit input and make it real 8bit. If the LVDS is 8bit, that's another story.

yeah, i guess i'm kinda skeptical one way or another. the panels for the sony Z series as well as the some of the panels for the asus UX3*** series come up as 8 bit on panellook. what makes me skeptical is more the fact that the asus ultrabooks run 1366x768 displays on the exact same systems as the 900p and 1080p "8 bit" displays, and i can't imagine the 768p display would really be 8 bit.
