I have been looking for an upgrade for my older Intel 945 based Lenovo notebook for a while now. But nobody seems to have T7200's in stock anymore. A friend of mine claims I can use the T7250, an 800 fsb cpu, on my older 667 fsb notebook. It will just be clocked a tad slower, but the mult will remain the same. I am skeptical.
Has anyone tried this? The 800 fsb cpus are actually a lot cheaper for comparable clock speeds.

Nope.
The 945 chipset does not support 800MHz CPUs, as there are no Socket M CPUs with a 800MHz FSB frequency (only 667MHz).
Socket P CPUs (eg. T7250) are incompatible with the 945 chipset. -
The real issue is that the sockets are different... If you have two sockets that are compatible, what your friend is saying is true. So like a T7250, which is 2.0GHz at 800mhz. It would be 1.66GHz, assuming sockets were compatible...which in this case, they aren't.

What's the difference between socket P and M?
-
Physically, one pin is moved over (keyed differently). Electrically, the pinout is different too.

production of T7200 has been stopped. Even the T7400, T7600 .. are rare now..
Sorry to say that it will be hard to find.. -
i have found a place which might still have the T7200 and/or the T7400

one more thing .. are you sure that your notebook's cpu replaceable ? i mean .. can you change it yourself ? -

You can always check out eBay. There's some T7200s right now and probably some faster ones if you check around there. I've been tempted to upgrade my T7200 but the improvement to a T7600 seems minimal at best, especially if you factor in the higher price.

+1 Ebay.
You can get a T7400 for less than $150....But unless you don't run any CPU-intensive tasks, you won't see any performance boost with a CPU upgrade. Normally HDD/RAM upgrades boost the overall performance of windows. -
i have been burned numerous times buying CPUs on Ebay. Pretty much the only negative points on my ebay profile are from sellers "retaliating" when I call them out on selling dud chips.
As far as being able to replace my cpu, on most Lenovo notebooks the CPU, ram and HDD are considered FRU "field replaceable units". There is even an exploded view diagram with instructions on the Lenovo website.
In regards to seeing a performance increase, I am using a celeron 420 single core, which defaults to 533 FSB now.
I am sure my motherboard is the same as the one in lenovos similar model which features T7200 and t7400 chips. It even shares a bios!
So going from 533 to 667 fsb, doubling the number of cores and getting a 400mhz cpu speed increase should net some perceptible difference.
I do a lot of audio wprk on my notebook. And the difference between my aging dual core desktop and the notebook is annoying. -
i bought my t7250 on ebay not a long time ago for a sweet price. Works beautifully)) May be you should give it another go?

Only ULV processors are soldered to the motherboard these days. Most laptops have a socketed processor, so most systems are in fact upgradeable.

The T7xxx series have VT support, not the others. VT is useful fol running virtual machines.
-
T5600 also supports virtualization, as well as t5750, 5650, 5730 etc, but those are Socket P cpus
-
I had investigated the T2000 and T5000 series. the T2000 doesnt really offer enough performance boost to make me want to open my notebook up. The T5000 are a big maybe. When I get a new notebook I am wiping this one and installing vista 64 bit and probably one of the 64 bit linuxes. So 64 bit support is important to me.

I think your choice to get a T7200 is a great one. I just think you need to reconsider ebay, it's the only place you'll consistently find them. Make a WTB thread here though, someone might have one.

I think I am going to sell some of my vintage cisco gear on ebay and take the plunge with one of the sellers with a high (5 digit or better) rating.
I see a lot of sub $200 T7200's over there. I guess thats gonna be my birthday present this year.
