I can't seem to find an answer anywhere, but i'm using speedfan to monitor my temperatures and would like to know what are acceptable temperatures for i7-820qm cpu.
The cores are running around 45-55C, for which the program gives the fire icons![]()
But i'm pretty sure those temps are not bad.

If 45-55 is bad, my current C2D T7500 would have fried itself out ages ago.
Most of the Intel CPUs are manufactured to withstand temperatures as high as 100 degrees plus, so 45-55 doesn't sound like anything to worry about. -
i'll set the warning icon to 90C for now.
If anyone knows better then i'd like to hear.
ps. i don't OC -
I don't either, but my complete lack of basic maintenance means my CPU regularly hits 70-80 degrees just after start-up. I had to undervolt the CPU at one point to stop it from consistently hitting 90+ since it tended to throttle and slow down at that point.
I advise keeping the warning icon to 80+ but no higher. -
If you define stress as it running Prime 95 Small FFT/Orthos/Linx etc. then your CPU temperature will be a lot higher than say running a game (which might seem demanding but not nearly as much - more idle cycles within the CPU).
Either way, for normal use under load (stress), try and keep the temperature at 70C at most. If you're stressing your CPU to the max however then 80C is the safest long-term limit. CPU's won't throttle or turn your system off until they get to about 90-95C.
Always keep the ventilation holes clean where the CPU fan is (same for the GPU) and if your laptop becomes a few years old then a good idea is to take it apart and clean the fans. You will get dust in them sooner or later, even if you live in a supposedly sterile environment. -
my 740qm temps are constantly between 55-65 and I cannot get them any cooler, never ever hit over 75 though even when gaming.
-
I ran my laptop for a year after the fan quit. The computer would shut down when the temp reached 90 but this rarely happened. If you remove all the stickers from the ram and hard drive and the wireless card and the front of the computer it will run 10 degrees cooler.
-
I'll leave the warning for 70C. I'm running fairly CPU intensive stuff at the moment and the temps are between 45-60C.
I'm using the warning limit mostly so i can learn more when the CPU is under much load, so i can handle/control it to keep it from overheating.
I clean the laptop from dust every couple months.
But i'm not having problems with the temperatures so i guess i'll leave everything intact -
I've heard that up to 80% of the rated tj. max is fine. So for the 820pm its 100C x .8 = 80C.
-
If it doesn't itself off, you are fine.
