Hi. I have a inspiron 9300 laptop and want to know if I can put a 8600 dvd burner into my laptop in place of my cd burner since my cousin has a spare that he can give to me. Has anyone tested this and if so does it work?

cause looking at pictures of the two drives from ebay, the 8600 drive has a small section that sticks out in the back whereas the 9300 drive doesn't.

Ah now i see, the 8600 CD/DVD drive is a module, not an optical. Well, I am not sure this is going to work.

Could you post a picture of the drive? Any standard drive would work in the i9300, but if the 8600 drive you want to put in is modular, then as posted, it may not work. Some modular drives are proprietary, and some aren't. My laptop has a modular bay, and it is simply a standard drive with a modified benzel.

Here are some pictures of the drives from ebay since I don't have a digital camera. The first one is the dvd burner. The second picture is the current drive I have in my 9300

Ah, look at that. The drive on the left is in some sort of enclosure; it is a standard drive though. I'm not sure if you can take that off although you probably can. Maybe email the seller about that and see if it is removable.

How much is this drive by the way? New DVD burners go for ~$70 or so online.
