Hi there, I recently asked an eBay seller to up a laptop's gpu from 765m GTX to 860m GTX for 150$ I however agreed and proceeded to pay, I then later found out there are kepler 860m which is even worse than 765m by a considerable margin. Luckily though I paid via paypal, is it possible to ask for a refund in case this is a kepler model? and I should be noting that my laptop model is Alienware 18. I couldnt find a maxwell upgrade kit online and since then I started to worry a lot. The seller is a very respectable seller with a total of 1350+ positive feedback from selling laptops.
Regards.

The Kepler 860m is better than the 765m by a considerable margin and the Maxwell 860m is not available for the Alienware.
-
Maxwell is only available as soldered BGA versions right now so no you can't get an MXM Maxwell 860M for the AW18. As stated, 860M Kepler is still better than 765M Kepler, but if you don't want it then your best bet is to politely explain to the seller and ask if he is willing to refund the price diference.

Its available in one of custom laptops website, 2gb 860m GTX, and it states is maxwell. -
Wherever you are reading this is unfortunately wrong.
Having said that, the Kepler 860m is still a good card and as mentioned above quite a bit better than the 765m. -

This is my reference:
XOTIC PC | Alienware 18 (SLI 860M) - 18.4" Gaming Laptop
and Nvidia for misleading information. -

Anyone guys? Well did I get scammed ?
-
What do you mean scammed? You're getting what you asked for.
-
You didn't scammed, but XoticPC and nVidia could've done a better job explaining things.
There's a Kepler and Maxwell version of 860M. Both come in 2GB and 4GB vRAM versions now I believe. The difference is Maxwell has always been soldered onto the motherboard and does NOT support SLI, while Kepler 860M is MXM meaning it is an actual physical card that goes into a dedicated connector slot on the motherboard.
If a laptop such as the Alienware 18 is known for having GPU MXM slots to accept graphics cards, then the 860M on that machine will most definitely NOT be Maxwell, especially not if it supports SLI. -

765m almost cost the same as 860m Kepler. -

I spoke to XoticPC technical guy, and explained to him that, he claimed to provide 860m Maxwell! -

Well dont get bothered guys, I think I got scammed, I ordered the pc a week ago, stills no tracking number whats so ever. Luckily tho I paid by paypal.
-
Are you serious? You realize these laptops aren't ready for shipping at the blink of an eye? They have to be custom configured and then sent out to you. XoticPC is a very reputable so no you're not getting scammed. If you're that concerned PM their reps who frequent this forum.

I didnt buy it from XoticPC, and btw the technical support guy is "misleading" customers, there is no such is as a MXM 860m Maxwell. I spoke to a respectable ebay MXM gpu supplier. -
My bad. So who did you purchase this from?

They get a commission for selling items, no wonder. In my chat, I didnt tell them which model perform the best, 1 out of 3 said its kepler, ebay seller also said its a kepler.
Again, Im speaking to technical assistance personnel, she just confirmed its a kepler, no such thing as MXM 860m Maxwell. I guess both dell and XoticPc have to fire some employees. -
Ha! If Dell had to fire someone every time they provided incorrect information there'd be nobody left. Honestly Dell needs to fire whomever is in charge of their CS department because they obviously aren't well qualified or have the proper training and documentation and information in MOST cases users ask them questions. They just tell you what you want to hear usually. As far as XoticPC, I don't know. They are usually pretty well versed in the latest terminology and laptop technology. Just a confusing situation I think.
This whole 860m thing is stupid. I don't know wth nVidia was thinking with removing SLI from GM107 (860m) and having two cards with the same designation with two different architectures. They should have at least called the Maxwell 860m a GT 860m since it doesn't support SLI, and the Kepler GTX 860m. Or just call one 860m and the other 865m... or some way to identify them as different. But better yet just eliminate Kepler 860m and add SLI to 860m.
