Hi,
I currently have the 8770w with DC and a k4000m. I'm looking to buy a p5000m but after some searching, I found out ill need to mod the vbios which I've never done before, this is the main thing I believe I'll need some help with. I also may need a new heatsink but I'm not sure yet. Any help will be appreicated. If theres something you think I might not know or I should know before I upgrade, please let me know. Ill do a bench after the upgrade for those interested.
Any questions, fire away.
Thanks,
-str

If it's the typical vbios issue that the 8770w has, as long as you get a non-hp graphics card it should be fine. As for your heatsink, as long as it's the one that covers the full k4000m, you've got the right one, however you may want to upgrade the fan itself, Im not sure how much heat the p5000 puts out, but if it's anything like the gtx 980m the original fan will struggle under intense loads

Thanks for the reply, the p5000 is Dell, so that will be okay? Ill look into getting a new fan/heatsink for sure.
-
See my YT comment , if I were you I would take 1070. Runs cooler and clocks better. Look for the MSI version of 1070.
-
Okay, Ill look into getting the 1070.
I also tried switching to 10bpc earlier but after pressing apply it switches back to 8bpc. Any idea why? -
You need to reflash the EDID of the DC panel...it is not easy, but doable:
【新提醒】【原创】解决8770W DC屏win10无法开启10bpc的问题 - 惠普 HP 专区 - 专门网 - Powered by Discuz! (51nb.com) -
It mentions that the edid will need resetting every time i open my computer. That serious? because i thought it was simpilar than that.
-
You will need to do the second method with soldering and re-flashing EDID if you want to be permanent solution.
-
Is it worth going to 10bpc? Also i think im going to go for the Dell p5000, the vram is something id love to have and its cheaper, plus im not an OC-er. Is there going to be much of a performance difference compared to the 1070? In games and coding/rendering.
Can you tell me about vbios modding for the p5000 too, im worried about that. sounds hard.
Thanks again mirageLast edited: Apr 21, 2021 -
You don’t need to modify Dell’s card vBios. It will work straight out of the box on 8770W.
Yes, there will be significant difference between P5000 and GTX 1070 - there is almost 2500 pts difference in FS graphics in favor of 1070... this makes 5-7FPS in games where this matters on low fps and heavy GPU related games. There will be difference between 30-32 and 40FPS.
10 bit color is worth every penny!!! 8 bit on DC looks terrible. Strong banding everywhere in gray/dark color-scales. -
Okay thanks, i went for the p5000 as im not that much of a laptop gamer. I managed to switch to 10bit colour and its a lot better.
One more question, is 10bit normal for monitors nowadays? And what games/apps support it?
Thank you so much for the help. After seeing your YT a while ago i was hooked on the 8770w. -
My desktop color depth says 32 bit, but the output says 8/10 bpc. Is that normal? 10 bpc is DC?
-
Yes , most expansive LCDs nowadays support 32 depth / 10+ bits color output.
DC is an amazingly accurate , still great display even in 2021. Beats most of the competitors easily. -
How did you OC your monitor? Id love 75fps
-
You need CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) tool for this.
But keep in mind - not every DC panel allow such an overclock. From all three I‘ve had - the first reached only 67Hz stable, the second - 70Hz and my current one can reach 85Hz, but everything after 74.400Hz turns the color to 8 bit, because of insufficient DP bandwidth, DP 1.2 has limit. -
Will this work with a standard 1080p display?

The P5000m is here! Any recommendations for thermal pads? I have no idea what thickness to pick, i cant find anything online for it. For thermal paste i was going to get the Arctic MX-5.
-
As long as your pads aren't dried out on your current card, and there are the same amount, they should be fine, that's what I did, as for paste, that should be fine, I used mx-4 but they're both fine
