    Hello everyone,

Ive got a big, and rather strangely enjoyable problem on hand, this is with my Compaq 6720s.

I need your help to assess something which has come across to be really strange to me.

So for about 2 hours i was sat watching a film, all going well, just minding my business, it isnt plugged into my sound system.

However when i went to go to put it on my desk, plug my speakers in and run another film,a very heavy interference kicked in when i plugged my sound in.

At this point the light starting flicking to confirm charge, however this was flicking on and off which was very strange but the power icon was showing plugged unplugged ... etc you get the picture.

Then i noticed that the mouse pad started darting around, and soon enough became unusable, even with a mouse plugged in.

I then went off and had a think, when i returned i decided to put the laptop on the floor, now my speakers are on still, but plugged into nothing.

While the laptop is off, i slowly plug the power cord into the laptop, and a massive interference picks up in my speakers, and this quite litterally makes my speakers buzz, loudly.

This is the strangest problem that ive come across and i have no idea about laptop PSU's, or input or anything like that.

I could use your help as its driving me insane.

    Cheers
    Cata.

I think this is the hum loop / earth loop / ground loop problem which has been annoying audio people for years, as explained here. It can also cause picture degradation on monitors. I resume that both the computer and the speakers have 3-pin mains plugs for their power supplies.

Sometimes you can fix the problem by plugging equipment in to separate sockets on each side of the room but often you need to stop the earth connection on one of the items of equipment. Using a 2-pin mains plug adaptor may be easier than starting to cut wires.
