I'm looking for a good solid and portable HDD enclosure that I can use alongside my laptop. I found a 320gb Hitachi Travelstar at Newegg for a good price, and want to find something that will work with it. Can someone point me towards what I'm looking for?

You have a big choice here. You will need one with an internal SATA connector (not the older IDE / PATA but there are some enclosures which have both).

Personally, I buy enclosures which have both USB and eSATA external connectors. eSATA will give you full speed if connected to an eSATA port while USB 2.0 hits a ceiling at just under 30MB/s.

These are very simple. Really, any make or model is fine. Just pick the price and features you want. There really isn't a better or worse.

getting an enclosure with a fan is worth the couple extra bucks. i highly recommend rosewill for cheap but good or ams venus models which are a little pricier but omg so perfect.

imho, the passive cooling of aluminium enclosures is sufficient even for 3.5" drives, unless you use them in hot environment. You don't need a fan for 2.5" drives.

I agree with that, a HDD shouldn't be too cool eitherway, it's not healthy to have it under like 30C AFAIK as they are mechanical and spins around pretty fast.

I can't see why it would not work, although one person seems to have had problems.
