I'm in the market for my first laptop, and ive looked at the Asus z96J. I was about to buy it when my dad tells me that this guy at work was telling him about some new component that will be out in desktops in maybe 3 or so months (im assuming he means in australia), that once put into laptops will significantly improve battery life. Now I've replied that if its only coming out in desktops in three months, that it probably wont be in laptops for a while, and that by the time it does, it will be way out of my price range anyway.

But does anyone have any idea about what it could be...and if i should wait for whatever it is? Lol...i realise this is a very vague question. What I'd really like to know is should I just buy this Z96J now, or is there something coming out really soon that I should wait for.

Keeping in mind that if i dont buy it now...then i obviously dont have a laptop to use at uni for a while.

    Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is a different chipset/platform (santa rosa) coming out for the Core 2 Duo in 2007 that will implement "Robson", which is a flash memory that should reduce HDD activity thus improving performance and reducing power usage, but that is a long time away. It comes part of the chipset/platform, ie not something you add to the latop or can upgrade.

Santa Rosa is the next generation, and naturally will be faster and offer more features. But being 6 months away (at least) it's not exactly something to wait for if you need a laptop now. Core 2 Duo on napa platform has yet to show up after all!

And when the Santa Rosa is released there will also be the next best thing to be released 6 months later, that's how technology is. If you don't need the laptop now and will only become a necessity later on, then you can always wait :)
