I am planning on buying an ASUS S37S with an nvidia 8400m built in. It has a 13.3 inch widescreen monitor and I would like to buy an external monitor to use while I am in the dorm room.

The ASUS S37S has a default resolution of 1280x800, does that mean that when I plug in an external monitor it would display at that resolution too? The monitors I am looking at have a 1680x1050 resolution. Would the 8400m be able to output to that resolution?

If somebody can answer my question I will give them some rep.

Your 8400m will be able to handle the second resolution with no problem - you can edit the individual resolutions of the screens with either the nvidia control panel, or through the 'display properties' icon on your control panel. Should be no problem.

You can have a different res on a second monitor than primary. Can a 8400m handle that? It depends on what game you want to play ;).

Thanks for the quick responses guys :).

Would I have to change it every time I plugged the external monitor in, or would it do it automatically?

You can set it up so it is automatic. My Integrated 1150 supports 2048x1536 so yea 8400m no problem.

Perfect. Now all I need to do is get the laptop :). I'll be getting it in a few months for a senior graduation present.
