    Hi

    I upgraded my Compaq 610 from a Celeron 560 to a Core 2 Duo T5550. This laptop uses a GL960 chipset and has a 2GB PC 6400 DDR2 RAM.

This is the issue I'm having. I need to boot into the BIOS, save the BIOS setting, and then boot into Windows. If I don't do this Windows switches the screen off as soon as the driver for the X3100 Intel graphics are loaded. I tried with both Vista and Win 7. I don't have this problem if I boot in safe mode.

I tried replacing the factory 2GB RAM with other RAMs and the result is the same. A temporary fix that's working for now is to use the laptop with the factory 2GB of RAM + a 512MB PC4200 (533) RAM.

I remember reading something similar to what's happening to me with the HP 6720.

1- Is there any work around not involving using PC4200 RAM nor having to boot into the BIOS first?

2- Do you think that I should remove the T5550 and put a Pentium Dual Core T2000 series instead (e.g. T2370)?

    Thx

GL 960/GM 965 along with the T2370 would be the best combination. I noticed the T2370 is very light on power consumption and heat dissipation and it's just as fast as a T7500. I went from T2370 to T7500 on my first laptop and I haven't noticed any significant difference in speed just extra heat. I have a T2370 and I really don't like to throw parts out if you need one and you're in US I'll drop it in a mailing envelope for you.

I've upgraded several laptops from Celeron to C2D. It always works as long as the laptop is not an HP. HP seems to use 2 different motherboards; one for Celeron CPUs and one for C2D. I'm not sure exactly what is the difference between the 2 mobos. The one with Celeron doesn't like it when the FSB is increased from 133 to 166 or 200MHz as a result of the CPU upgrade.

So you guys thinks that I can use a dual core CPU as long as the FSB is the same as the one in the Celeron (i.e. 133 / 533MHz)?
