After much research on the net it looks promising that I may be able to upgrade my Acer Aspire 3660 cpu from a 1.6ghz 420m to a Core 2 duo...the T7400.

Here are my specs from Everest:

Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600 (WinXP Retail)
    CPU Type Mobile Intel Celeron M 420, 2200 MHz (12 x 183)---over-clocked already :)
    Motherboard Name Acer Inc. Bodensee3
Motherboard Chipset ATI Radeon Xpress 200M
    BIOS Type Phoenix (06/14/06)

For detailed specs check out the attached report from Everest.

    Can anyone confirm my findings:

1-The socket type is the same for the m420 and the t7400.
2-The Ati chipset can or cannot support the t7400.
3-No bios upgrade s needed or one is needed.
-if needed what and where.

I am desperate to upgrade as my new job requires me to run a variety of VM'S on my laptop.

    Thanks in advance from Africa

The Acer Documentation and BIOS release notes show no support for the Merom core (Core 2 Duo). The best upgrade as per the acer documentation will be a T2600.

    Best get a T2450@2GHz and pin-mod it to 2.4GHz.

I have the same chipset as yours the ATI X200M. My laptop has been upgraded from the celeron M420 to the Core Duo T2500.

In my research I found a lot of examples where people have upgraded to Core 2 Duo (T7200 mostly) on laptops having the ATI X200M chipset.

So you should be able to upgrade. For my side I'm only waiting to get my hans on a cheap T7200 or even beter a T7400 or T7600 :)

    Good luck with the upgrade

Thanks guys for the feedback...it can be quite scary out there by yourself

Now the real challenge starts of finding somebody in South Africa that actually sells the chip. Might have to the e-bay way and wait a bit.

I will post my findings once upgraded and thank you again. :D

Where did you get the documentation and bios release notes. I have checked the Acer site and could only find driver downloads? Technical documentations was limited to other models but not mine.

I would love to check it out myself and keep for future reference.

Did you need to upgrade your bios and if so what one and where did you find it?

    Thanks
