I needed to disable AHCI mode from BIOS in order for XP to read my drives upon installation. Now, I have a few questions.
1. Will it benefit me to enable AHCI mode again?
2. In order to re-enable it I will need to install the drivers for it. However, the drivers I get from Dell don't have an installation file and they simply extract to a folder. I tried manually updating them through Device Manager but I get no results. What do I need to do in order to install them?
-
1. yes, it speeds up hard drive access, from what i understand also boosts performance overall.
2. right click and chose "install" on the .ini file? -
Go to device manager-->IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers-->right click on the Intel controller-->properties-->driver-->update driver and point to the folder where the files were extracted.

I think what he meant was INF file.

Ok, I got onto my notebook and here are the options I am presented with:
Which do I choose?Attached Files:

Should be the first one.

It tells me it can't find a better match of drivers for the current hardware but I still can't enable AHCI.
-
Ok, make sure AHCI is disabled in BIOS. Download this: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/download.aspx?url=/14848/eng/iata78_enu.exe&agr=N&ProductID=2101&DwnldId=14848&strOSs=44&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Professional&lang=eng
Once install is finished boot back into BIOS and enable AHCI. Reboot to XP? correct? and it will install. -

Have you tried removing the old driver and forcing install of the new driver.
-
But let's say that I am going to reinstall XP. I will need to provide the drivers during the "F6" screen upon booting from the disc. Without a floppy drive I will need to have it load the drivers from a USB drive or slipstream the drivers onto the CD?
How can I make the USB drive into a floppy to boot the drivers from? -
Slipstream the drivers in. There's so many threads here on how to do it.
-
If none of that works then use http://www.nliteos.com/ to create a slipstream or go out and buy an external USB Floppy drive, though I would just slipstream.

I got it working using these instructions: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=164159&page=2
But on a side note, nLite kept crashing every time it got to integrating the drivers.
