Hi,
I ordered a custom FE590 that came with a free upgrade from 512 MB of DDR-SDRAM to 1GB DDR-SDRAM (DDR2-533, 512 MBx2). If I wanted to upgrade it to 1.5GB, could I still keep 1 of the 512MB chips in and just get a 1GB chip? Would it have to match the 512MB chip of DDR2-533 or could I go with the DDR2-667? Also if I have to stay with the DDR2-533, do I want PC2 4200 or PC2 4300? What about Cas Latency and ECC? So many different configurations and chips, please help!![]()
Thanks,
markeyp

Yes you can get a 1gb module and leave the other 512mb module in.
You can get a faster ram module, but it will only run at the speed of the slower module.
I believe laptop ddr2 ram modules are non-registered ecc and CAS Latencies shouldn't be a problem as it will default to the same as the slower ram depending on your bus speed.
If your laptop's FSB is 533 just go with a 533mhz module of 1gb from the same manufacturer as your other 512mb ram module.
Mixing different ram modules is not a good idea.

Get 533mhz ram, the 667 ram has almost no speed difference due to its higher latency.

Thanks to both of you for your quick replies. I guess I'll go with the 533mhz if there is no difference in speed , even though the 590 has a 667 fsb.

Does anyone happen to know what brand (manufacturer - Corsair, Muskin, OTC, etc...) of Ram is installed in the Vaio FE590? I still didn't receive mine yet, but wanted to preorder the Ram so I'll have it when my notebook comes in. Or should I just sell my two 512MB sticks on ebay and buy all new 2Gb DDR2-667 ram?

The Sony OEM modules in mine are Micron. I got better Everest memory read/ write scores using ddr2-533 modules plus they are cheaper.
ADvice for upgrading Vaio FE590 RAM
