Whats different betwen those two and what is better? Can I switch to IDE?On my laptop default is set to AHCI.

AHCI is better. No reason to use IDE.

Not only that but IDE the older setup and either Sata or AHCI if your laptop can use it would be better for your setup. Just remember if you should ever update your BIOS make sure to change it to AHCI other wise it will be the default when you update your BIOS. IDE is still good but those hardware that use it especially in laptop are getting hard to find and expensive. -
The IDE compatibility mode is only for certain operating systems that don't understand AHCI until you install special drivers (like XP). There's no reason to use it with anything modern, because AHCI is a faster method of accessing the drive.

AHCI SATA operation allows for hot swap capabilities as well as NCQ (native command queuing) which allows for more efficient read/write operations.
