AHCI, SATA, Windows XP and ICH9M

I'm a little lost about how to make sure SATA drivers are loaded while I'm installing Windows so I can use it in SATA mode and not IDE-emulated.

I'm trying to slipstream the Intel Storage Matrix Manager into nLite under the Drivers section but nLite isn't recognising the file, and from what I've read I should be integrating three files called aahci.inf, something, and something else. The ISMM folder doesn't have any *.inf files, so where am I supposed to download the driver with the aachi.inf and others?

Also, I read somewhere else that ICH9M no longer uses AHCI? In that case, what am I supposed to do?

 

Download this (XP 32-bit). It should have the INFs (iaAHCI). Slipstream it.

why are you bothering with ahci? degrades performance.. i mean do you need ncq or hot plugging?

 

Enabling AHCI does not degrade performance. Running the HDD in IDE mode results in about a 5-10% loss in performance.

 

No actually for normal usage IDE emulation is marginally, possibly insignificantly faster than AHCI.

NCQ is only faster for random read/write tasks (iirc), which is why I want to enable it.

NCQ generally slows performance very slightly in a non-server environment

 

i'm afraid thats not consistent with the 100 other benchmarks out there..

I have successfully managed to switch from IDE to AHCI driver with my XP setup and ICH9M chipset. Now I have an external hdd case with 2 hard drives connected via E-SATA. I can get port multiplying to work under Linux (it sees both external drives), but Windows XP recognizes only one of the drives. Is there any way to make XP see both drives ? I was hoping that AHCI driver would take care of that ?

I have advent 5431 laptop and i am trying to put XP on it but i need the HD drivers for it.I did try about 10 diferent versions of XP but still no luck.

Finally i could install Windows XP.

 

-> intel.com go to support & drivers, select chipset, OS version, the driver is called INTEL RST, or Intel Rapid Storage Technology. The driver to use during windows installation is referred to as the 'f6 install' and is fairly small. Then once you have windows installed you can download the full driver for windows if you want to use any of the features.
