I purchased this 54mm expresscard in September 2013 and successfully installed it my Toshiba laptop under Vista Ultimate SP2. The firmware included with card is ASMedia 104x 1.16.1.0.

I upgraded my system a few months later to Windows 7 Ultimate SP1. Two expresscard firmware update later to current version 1.16.18.1 driver in April 2014 and expresscard continued to run fine.

However, a few days ago I discovered the card was disabled under that latest firmware. I subsequently removed that driver and reinstalled the original 1.16.1.0. Card runs fine under that, but when I attempt to update to latest driver, card becomes disabled.

    Anyone have this problem?

What would be a more stable solution for my eSATA system backup controller?

After installation of mine from my HDX to my Precision it was as simple as plug and play under Windows 7 Pro. When I updated to W8.1 it simply continued to function as specified.

I was prepared for those driver issued but it just worked. All I did was plug it in.

    Sorted. :D

Solution was quite simple, actually. Site I downloaded drivers from has two driver versions:
    • 1.16.18.16034 - 26/03/2014
    • 1.16.18.1 WHQL - 10/04/2014

Funnily, I had not noticed the version differences earlier, but the 16034 version seemed to work fine at the time.

I revisited the site and then noticed the differing versions. Original driver is WHQL version, so I downloaded that version and successfully installed it.

BTW, system backups are much faster with latest driver. 40 minutes v over 60 minutes for original driver.
