Has anyone tried installing the AMD 7970m into a msi gt60 yet? If so, can you post your method as to how in the world you did that? Thanks a million :D (I don't own one but I'm deciding and I don't want to have it with the gtx 670). Also, what size SSD can fit into the mSata slot in the 9150?

all we can do is to wait for someone to confirm whether the card is compatible with the GX660 heatsink, most likely it'll work but with modded bios and heatsink in worst case..

Ok sounds good! I hope to soon be able to do cool stuff with computers, but for now if I tried this I would probably blow something up xD

I'm not sure if anyone but the resellers even have a 7970M or a GT60.

The GT60 and GT70 will behave the same, so when ViciousXUSMC gets one you will get your confirmation.

This will make for a really fun summer project this summer :D Although, I'm confused as to how heatsinks fit. I want to invest in a 5870m heatsink, but does having 2 or 3 copper tube things matter? And I dunno how well it will fit in the gt 60 or force 16f3.

Get the 3 heatpipes if you can. Feel free to read up on wikipedia how they work and you will see why they are important.

i dont see the point anymore of getting gt70, as gt 60 has exactly same features as gt70(backlit,screen finish, etc). gt 70 is just too heavy to carry around. and btw, gtx 670m is with 0.9V :D.

I read and now feel educated! It seems like the 3 heat pipe heatsinks are a rarity though! I checked rkcomputers and I think they have one, but I'm not sure. Ive been reading the 7970m installation thread, and I just want to know if there's an easier way to deal with the heatsink than grinding stuff down with tools? I don't own any Dremel tools and this would be my first time ever messing with a laptop.

Get an AMD card lol. But I read about some control panel on GT models? Not used optimus myself.

The only way it can be properly disabled is in the bios... Can't do it in Windows. :p

It's usually done by disabling the Intel integrated graphics.

Meaker's advice is quite sound, but if you can't disable the integrated GPU in the bios you need proper Enduro drivers or you'll be stuck with the HD 4000.

The inside of my GT70 shows the 3 heatpipe gpu heatsink.

    https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ko7s6zYitvI/T5_YDBiA6yI/AAAAAAAABOU/b6ODseczKjA/s1024/gpu-cpu.jpg

My sources tell me that the GPU heatsink is the same on all branded (not barebone) MSI notebooks be they AMD or Nvidia.

So I should be just fine using this heatsink to mod into a 7970.

Im trying to source one now and will do the mod after all my review benchmarks are done on the stock GTX670M

Rather than shims or thermal pads I may very well just go with my very own thermal paste sandwich technique :D ICD is super thick and can easily sub for thermal pads and transfers better at the same time.

In some cases it can almost be bad as RAM chips run very hot so the heat easily gets passed to the core. I am not too worried about it though and if my mod method works it will make the mod easier for more people to do.

    Hey Vicious,

With that info do you think I would be ok putting a 670m/675m into a gx600r? My heat sink looks pretty much identical to yours and I would like to put an Nvidia card in the 660 (need cuda for some graphics apps I use.)

I cant seem to find anyone whos tried it yet. Im guessing I would need to change the bracket and maybe drill off some parts of the sink to make it fit but otherwise it should be OK im hoping.

670m still at 0.9v takes more electricity then a 7970m. I would suggest you upgrade your gpu to a 7970m or 680m if you can and you will notice desktop type power in a laptop. :D

Don't get me wrong 670m can still play games but like you are waiting for a good deal on the 7970m or 680m the difference between them and the 670m is huge.

I just had a chance to try this out (actually it's the Radeon 290x M)

    I have the GT60-0ND.

I had originally purchased a GX60 Destroyer....CPU was bottlenecking, GPU was awesome.. So it was basically like GPU heavy games could be set to ultra, but CPU heavy games couldn't even play on low. I don't have any problem with the AMD A series on desktops, but it was too slow on the GX60.

Long story short I was trying to unlock my bios and Fvcked it up....so I had this paperweight sitting around with a 290x video card in there...so I thought I'd try to pop it in my GT60 to see how it worked.

It does work, I can play games and it uses the card very well.

There are a few issues though:

    1. No detection of temperature, any program that looks at CPU or GPU temperature shows zero for everything.
    2. System fan is always set to full blast no matter what. It never overheats though, it just doesn't know what the temperature is so it defaults to full blast.
    3. Battery life takes a hit because it's not good at knowing when it's using the AMD card or the Intel.

The performance is definitely better than the nvidia 675, but it comes with side effects. Just thought I'd share my outcome since I can't find even one page about anybody who's tried. :)

I think the temperature control is handled through the Nvidia card. Any software I use to try to detect the CPU or GPU temperature doesn't work. It just shows as zero degrees for all cards. The overclocking and temperature monitoring software that comes with the GT60 seems to be branded Nvidia.
