Hello everyone, i'm a new member.
I was surfing the net trying to find a good forum or site about laptop and processors and then i found "NotebookReview.com", i read some threads and then i was sure this site was the one i was looking for. Now i'm a glad member of it. =)
The reason i was searching a site like this, it's because i have a broken laptop, a HP ZV6000. It's my girlfriend's and she asked me to repair it.
I want to ask to all those who we'll read this post (and i hope you will give me an answer too): can i put an AMD Athlon 64 3700+ in a HP ZV6000?
Thanks to all those who'll answer me! =)

If it's broke why do you want to upgrade it?
-
yeah, it's broken. But i think the problem is the processor, that's why i have to buy a new one. I found an "AMD Athlon 64 3700+" on eBay and i don't know if it will work on the ZV6000.

are you sure its the processor. its very rarely the processor that breaks. its more likely the motherboard

I believe the Athlon 64 3700+ is a socket 754 chip and the ZV6000 takes socket 939 chips . . . so if that is the case then no.
I used to own an HP zv5000z, which had socket 754 and had the 3700+ as an option. -
I'm trying to recall here, but didn't HP use some socket 939 desktop CPUs in the ZV6000, in which case a 939 3700+ would work? At any rate, I'd agree that CPUs very rarely fail. I'd bet something else like the motherboard, is more likely the cause of the failure.

What symptoms does the laptop t? Does it turn on, but not boot? Or only the lights come on?
This info would help. -
Thanks anyone for the reply. I'm glad you're there trying to help me. =)
Anyway, about the processor...The 3700+ i found is a 939 socket.
The problem is when you try to power on the laptop, it get only to windows XP loading bar then it stops, even if you leave it so for 24h it will happen nothing. I also tried to format it, i put in my recovery cd, but it's no use; the pc stops after loading the various driver.
So i checked the hardware inside and i've found out that the thermo-paste was completely dry. So i bought a new thermo-paste and put it on, but it still didn't work, i checked again and the thermo-paste seemed to be dry again and so sticked to the cooling stuff. that's when i thought that the problem was a broken CPU who overheats enough to dry the thermo-paste and doesn't let the pc starts. Are my suspects right?
So i took a look inside -

@OP - only use a CPU the notebook was sold with. If they sold it with an S939 3700+, then that will work. As others noted, the CPU is probably not the problem. -

This can be used to test everything from HDD to RAM to CPU... you'll know what's wrong, no need to buy parts to "try and fix it". -
Ok, thanks everyone. I'll try what all of you said.
