What I want to find out is if it is worth paying more for the Intel. I have the following laptop: http://circuitcity.com/ssm/Acer-Aspire-15-4-Widescreen-Notebook-PC-5630-6288/sem/rpsm/oid/185213/catOid/-12963/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
for which I paid $700.
I could buy this laptop : http://circuitcity.com/ssm/Acer-Aspire-15-4-Widescreen-Notebook-PC-5100-5674/sem/rpsm/oid/185212/catOid/-12963/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
for $500.
The big differences:
$700 laptop
Intel Core 2 Duo T5500
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 224MB shared sys memory
$500 laptop
AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-53
ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 graphics and 512MB of shared system memory
I also want to play some games on the laptop. I will add memory up to 3gb ram to any of the two so the only question is whether i should choose between intel&intel or amd&ati.
Someone who knows please help!
Thanks

its hard to say, both computers have integrated graphics but the processors are prolly about the same. i'd go with AMD due to the price. it also has the slightly better graphics card (still integrated)
-
This is a tricky choice but I'd say go for the AMD notebook seeing as it has the Xpress 1100 which is better than the intel GMA 950 also it is cheaper
. The core 2 duo processor will be faster than the athlon but I think the athlon will serve you well enough.
Anyway seeing as you want to game and these are the 2 notebooks you are looking at then go for the AMD one, keep in mind a dedicated graphics card would be much better than both of these integrated ones for gaming. -
Keep in mind the more expensive of the two laptops also features twice as much memory.
-
Do you have any other laptops in mind that would be around $700 and better suited for light(to medium) gaming? Thanks for your responses!!

If you plan on playing any semi-recent games, then there's no question that the amd+ati notebook will perform better. How much is hard to tell, but there will definitely be a difference. On top of that it's cheaper, helping to defray the cost for the extra memory.
If you decide not to game, I'd stick with the intel notebook. -
How big of a difference in percentage is between AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-53 VS. Intel Core 2 Duo T5500?
-
Regualar, web-browsing, msn, music, no difference.
Heavily Cpu usage as converting a movie, heavy photoshopping, you might see a little bit of a difference. -
What kind of games do you plan to play? Dont expect much(gaming performance wise) with IGPs.
Also check out the Dell Vostro 1400/1500. The GMA x3100 should preform better in games then the ATI xpress 1100 option but i am not sure.
Also the Vostro 1000 w/ATI xpress 1150(higher clock then xpress 1100) is an option though depending on your gaming needs, a dedicated card(the Vostro 1400/1500 have dedicated card options) would be a better choice.
