Edit: Hm... now I want to know more about this supposed "ultra-thin form factor specification!" Sounds like AMD is ready to take on the Ultrabooks. Interesting. It doesn't matter what market they pursue, its already tough as it is whether were talking about ARM SOCs, or AMD branded SSDs.

If the SSD offers some advantages over other SSD providers especially for AMD chipsets than this could be a nice addition to "AMD Radeon/performnace branded Patriot RAM, Radeon GPUs, and AMD cpu (makes them seem very vertically integrated)." The actual SSD and its support better be good if its intended to compete with the likes of Samsung and Intel.

So AMD make their own CPUs, GPUs, APUs, servers with their own CPUs, Intel CPUs, and soon Arm based Opterons, a TV tuner. They have AMD branded RAM, CPU coolers, liquid CPU coler, RAMDISK, AMD APP Zone, their own overclocking and hardware monitoring utilities. Soon will have AWD (wireless display), Lightning bolt (supports 4K res! at 30Hz or 2X 1080p, uses DisplayPort) and Radeon branded SSDs. So what else is left!?
All they are missing now is their own motherboards and power supplies, displays and cases.

I had never counted what AMD had before, apparently they have way more stuff than I thought.

The sad thing is they really don't have any real ultrabooks with a CPU (APU) worth a damn. Every OEM is shoving it in a 15" chassis.

That's great news for AMD shareholders and the company itself. Good for them!

Putting radeon brand on stuff doesn't really mean they are involve with it..

or maybe they are into MMORPG and getting a amd branded machine will get set bonus :p?

Of course they're involved! They're slapping their name on a product made by someone else so it better be good! Every company has done this in one way or another at one point. I just hope the SSDs are NOT using sandforce controllers. ::shudders:: horrible decision that would be.

Hope it works out for them. I am getting tired of watching the depressing spiral of self destruction.

When Radeon RAM was first rumored last year, I was expecting that Llano would have a GDDR5 memory controller. That would have necessitated direct action from AMD in order to make the Llano launch happen since nobody makes GDDR5 main memory. Instead, what we actually got was garden-variety DDR3 that failed to differentiate itself in an overcrowded and hyper-competitive RAM market.

Something tells me that AMD doesn't have any grand vision in mind this time either - I'm expecting that AMD will just release a garden-variety SSD that will fail to differentiate itself in an overcrowded and hyper-competitive SSD market.

Why would Llano have GDDR5 memory controller? You mean for the IGP? That would necessitate GDDR5 on the mainboard, which wouldn't be a bad idea I guess, but added expense that most users probably wouldn't appreciate. In any case you're right though. It sounds just alike a branding opportunity and nothing else.

Pretty much - the IGP has shown that it can make use of as much memory bandwidth as it can get.

I hope they dont invest a lot in their own controller. And sandforce is not necessarily bad, Intel and Micron use it - and so do the other 300 + manufacturers. sandforce is doing good however with the exception of BSOD issues last year - All that is a thing of past now

Well, Intel uses their own firmware on the SF-2281, and I didn't know Mircon started using Sandforce. But at any rate, SF-2281 is doing better than the previous Sandforce controllers.

If they re-brand the SSDs like their RAM then they should partner with Samsung.

Sandforce firmware glitch occurred just once.
