AMD has introduced a new mobile platform, along with a new integrated graphics card, the Mobility Radeon HD 4200, and new CPU's, topped out by the 2.6 GHz Turion II Ultra M640. The CPU's are now at the 45 nm process.

I haven't seen any third-party benchmarks yet; hopefully there are performance increases in the CPU's from architectural improvements in addition to the 100 MHz speed boost. The article mentions that global availability is targeted to coincide with the release of Windows 7.

If you want performance, go Intel no questions asked. it's a bigger company, with bigger revenue and bigger research development.

    However...

Pricing vs performance will be key here. If this new platform is able to deliver decent CPU performance with being a fraction of the cost of Intel(and assuming they've made a more efficient CPU), then it'll be a worthy competitor. This will be even more apparent if AMD pairs it with a capable ATI GPU for a fraction few the cost(considering they own both companies) of having an Intel/ATI or Intel/Nvidia setup.

Remember that a large percentage of the population doesn't need that much CPU horsepower so if the AMD platform works well and sells cheap, it'll sell.
