    AMD Papermaster Mobile APU solution coming!

    Finally AMD introduced their ZEN and Vega based APU solution, which coming at the end of this year. APUs were great when they were first introduced in 2011. Llano was the first, than the second generation Trinity was still interesting. After many unexciting APU generations, now coming the Papermaster!

    Ryzen Mobile
    • Ryzen Mobile Solutions will Launch at the End of 2017 (Q4). Commercial market will see 1H 2018 availability.
    • Ryzen Mobile will get on-die 'Vega' cores, aka Vega based architecture.
    • Mark Papermaster mentions Zen 2 to be based on 7nm as well as Zen 3 (2020)
    • Vega is released in June says Papermaster, based on 14nm and 14nm+ node fabrication. Navi, the next-next-gen GPU architecture will be based in 7nm.
    • Ryzen 3 will be released in Q3 of this year

    If this Papermaster APU do at least 35W, but rather 45W TDP, than I'm sold. Otherwise 15W uninterested.

    Definitely not garbage stuff.

    That said, most of the 'high end' APU's from AMD weren't exactly garbage. They were quite decent for most people, but their capabilities were further downgraded by OEM's who paired them with sub-par components (including regular HDD's and single channel RAM) and completely inappropriate chassis sizes (to name a few).
    Oh and the cooling was botched too.

    When it comes to the thermal solutions in laptops... I cannot help but think that a miniature version of liquid cooling could easily be implemented coupled with other better materials that lead heat away or recycle it.

    But let's be frank, even though the tech is out there, OEM's won't be bothered to integrate it unless its profitable to them and unless its not saving them cash.

    We know AMD cannot control OEM's. And we also know that LONG after Intel paid AMD, OEM's STILL decided to pass on AMD APU's even though they improved in capabilities and efficiency, and priced them inappropriately.

    They were anything but 'budget friendly' - that's one of the other reasons they couldn't sell well.
    When you see AMD laptops paired with single channel RAM, no SSD, limited choice in chassis size (or being limited to a huge 15" or 17" chassis for a dual core or heck, even quad core APU) low grade screen that isn't even proper quality 1080p... people tend to pass on them... not to mention that they also pass on them because most sale reps only have 'Intel' on their minds (not that they know too much about laptops in the first place - seriously, I wonder how do these people end up with such jobs? - collectively, a small group of us here knows 10x more about computers than those sales reps).
