I heard today that AMD is a bad processor and it wears out after 3 years. This is bad news to me because my dv5000 is AMD and I just got it last month.
So is AMD really that bad?
-
Hahaha! Yeah right. My AMD K6 is still running like new. If you're wondering what that is...

That's 9 years and going. 3 times of whoever said 3.
Edit: I hope you mean durabillity wise. Any and every computer will be obselete every 3 years. But that doesn't mean they can't do what they did before. And my K6 still does that. Of course, my newer Athlon XP is much better at doing it. -
With all do respect - you've been misinformed. I've purchased many AMD's - in fact my first was and AMD K6-3 with functions perfectly today - purchased in '98. AMD's have a reputation of strong performance and reliability. I feel many in notebookreview would agree as well. I to this day love AMD processors, and recommend them to all who ask... Enjoy and don't worry...

AMD made some mediocre CPU's once... Like, 10 years ago.
Unfortunately, some people have made a small religion out of "Intel = Quality, AMD = rubbish", despite the fact that quality-wise, they've both been doing excellent for ages now (Although Intel has made a larger number of absolutely *huge* bugs in their chips) -
Thanks guys.
I forgot to post mine is a AMD Turion 64 Mobile ML-40. -

I have a close to 5yr old desktop with an Athalon XP 1800+ in it and it is **** good and still working fine.
I would've gotten AMD for my first lappy but Intel offered a better choice. Although I will go back to AMD. -

The CPU is the one of the parts likely to die last. Expect it to outlive the notebook. And no, you shouldn't have any problems after three years.

Intel Vs AMD is just like Ford Vs Chevy was back in the 60's and 70's. they both try to out do each other every few months. beacuse of this, both AMD and Intel make high quality products and whoever tells you otherwise just gave up trying to always have the "best" because it always changes and just chose a side and stuck with it.

my K6 is running perfect and has been overclocked for 2 years now

Lot's of K6 owners here, eh?

Since last year I used to use at home an AMD duron ( like intel's celeron) and the procesor was fine, little slow if it compares to an amd athlon 64 or my laptop.
In notebooks I'll prefer Intel because the experience but in desktop amd is a good choice. Probably in few years amd will do better notebooks cpu.
Yesterday I read in a spanish page that amd is planning to buy a wireless company. If AMD do this will compeet with intel in all the way ( procesor, graphics and wifi) -
If your looking for the fastest laptop go with intel core duo...if speed doesnt matter to you then just go with anything.
-
Aren't AMD's better for gaming? There's an article in a mag I read that pointed out little technological differences between the processors and why Intel's are more powerful (the new core duos) but why AMD's are still better for gaming.
-
I've heard that turions are good for gaming....but I don't know why.

A little quote from computer gaming world:
-
my first computer was a 100mhz AMD bought in 96 10 1/2 years old and still running strong!!!
I wonder if I can run super pi on it!! -
In laptops? I always bought Intel. Before recently AMD never had any good laptop chips. Maybe next laptop.
As far as desktops go, owned everything, they all worked or i got my money back. How many computers have I gave away (or threw away) that the cpu still worked? ALL OF THEM! (but 1, that cyrix 233 really sucked) -

My next laptop will be AMD, even though now im on Intel.

my second true desktop was a duran 1000 based. It was built in 2001. I had few problems with this desktop but the processor was never at fault. the first issue was with fried power supply. the second one was with a dead hard drive. the third one was due to a fried memory.... yes I sound quiet a lot, though the main reason for all the fried parts is related to the important amount of humidity (dump) on the environment where the computer was use (sea side).
This desktop was passed to my sister. She used it for over a year now with no problem until few weeks ago where the computer didn't want to power up.
I didn't have a chance to look at it yet, but I'm pretty sure that it's a problem related to the power supply (again) and that the processor is still in a good condition. -
AMD is no different in operating lifespan than Intel. They both have had their positives and negatives concerning performance over the years, but it is purely a "see-saw" effect. -
