How good are these two processors? Do they quality as budget, mainstream, or performance?

I post the rest of the components as well....Also, I found another computer that I thought looked good, but then it only had 1 GB RAM and Vista, so would this be better choice in point of performance?

Not meant to be a gaming computer, but I do not want trash either

AMD's are not trash. It's true that they are slower than intel CPU when you do a clock to clock comparison.

The difference in speed is reflected in the prices since AMD processores / notebooks are cheaper than intel to buy.

But how good is the RM70 then? Is it better than the Pentium Dual Core T2390?

Guys don't hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong....I think it's faster.

The advantage with the intel is you can upgrade to faster CPU, but yet again the socket used by AMD is new (an upgrade of socket s1) so chances are that more powerfull AMD processures will be availabe in the future from which you can chose to upgrade

AMD really isn't doing mobile work. The K8 architecture dates back to 2003 and is getting very long in the tooth. The K8 architecture doesn't support Intel Vector instructions from 2006. And K8 will most likely use more power than Intel's recent mobile chips.

BTW, I have one AMD laptop and two AMD desktops. My main home desktop is a 2.8 Ghz X2 5600+ system. It's fine for what I do but it is nowhere near competitive with Intel's midrange chips. This processor was AMD's top of the line two years ago.

T2390 and RM70 are close but the T2390 will win in many ways, As a CPU it is faster. The RM70 has greater RAM bandwidth and can run faster RAM PC6400 vs PC4200/4300. In real world could have some benifit with some applications.

AMD's don't break they just are not as fast in benchmarks and use more power (run hotter).

Intel and their numbering scheme's confuses me so much.

I would go for the AMD, the rm70 will offer a little more power than the T2390, but if you ever want to upgrade, the intel line is the way to go. That T2390 can be upgraded to a much faster processor like the P8600 which will annihalate any of AMD's mobile processors.
However if you do not plan on upgrading your system, go the AMD route, the system will have the hybrid nVidia gaphics technology, and will offer a pretty solid system. AMD processors also undervolt really well, so you should be able to knock a substantial load off your temperatures, through undervolting.

As powerpack mentioned, the AMD will also have greater memory bandwidth, which is great for handling lots of memory intenstive files.
