I'm going to say that i7, at least for now, is better.

I saw this HP laptop: HP Pavilion dv6 and dv6z Select Edition series | HP Official Store

It has the AMD quad 1.6GHz. Same as the i7 720QM. But the i7 overclocks itself

How does the AMD quad preform close to an i3? I just read the link . WOW.

I'm thinking about getting an i5 laptop or an AMD Quad since there around the same price.

In terms of performance per clock speed I don't know if AMD will ever catch up with Intel but that is not where AMD makes their mark. As you can see in the benchmarks, the N930 is basically the same or slightly better than the i5-520M. However, the only notebook that can be configured with both right now (the dv6), cost $950 with the 520M but only $820 with the N930, all other specs are the same. Battery life will probably be slightly worse on the N930 but performance will be the same.

I'll tell you, the AMD Quad has REALLY impressed me. My Sony recently died, and I was talked into a DV6z at WorstBuy. It doesn't get as hot as I expected... even close actually, and it gives very good performance for the price. 4 REAL cores, where a similarly priced i5 has 2 with HT. I have to say AMD is bringing the "value" heat to Intel... with style.

You got the dv6z with N930 from BB ( this), xgx? I am really interested in seeing some temperature readings and battery life tests if you have the chance.

Works for me. Just go the BB and search 'dv6z'. It is the one with N930/6GB/640GB HD for $800.

Sure, I have to get back to the house this evening to get them for you. I'm at work. Battery life, it's subjective, but I've been getting around 3.5hrs max. But I utilize 4 cores usually, to their potential... But I'm sure once the "new" wears off and I'm not on it ALL-THE-TIME, then it'll probably get better numbers.

Yep, that one. They had one in-store, when I was looking at a DM3z and they didn't have any of those new, so I was looking around, and this wasn't even on display yet. It was locked in the shelf-locker, brand new.

EDIT: I would have liked a better vid card, and I may take it back and order one from HP with one, because that's really the only anemic part of this notebook.

EDIT2: I was just thinking, that maybe why my temps are so low. It's running on integrated graphics.

Fantastic. I have been really wanting to see some info on the N930. Thanks.

Edit: Well, I have the version with the dual core N620 and ATI5650 and my CPU temps are the same when I am running on integrated graphics as they are when I have the 5650 switched on. And how low are we talking here? My N620 stays around 40C under normal use and maxes out at 66C.

Mine hovers idle at around 45c. Under load, around 59-63c. What are your ambient temps. I'm at 62F... it kinda skews the numbers.

EDIT: Are those 3dMark numbers OC'd? If not I'm definitely going 5650.

So your max temp is 63C? Even with a temp of 62F that is pretty damn good. My ambient temps are around 72-74F.

Those numbers are at stock clocks because I can't seem to find a way to OC it.

Slightly higher? Try $230 higher and sacrificing switchable graphics and lower temps.
