Which Processor for the laptop, do you prefer?
AMD

or
Intel

Just to clarify though...I chose Intel, but that's based on immediate availability.
Anyone who's at all practical and not fanboi on their decision knows that with the recent release of the Turion X2's and the upcoming Core 2 Duo's, that they'll both offer comparable solutions at similar price points, really. Some will do some processes better than the other, and vice versa...but the playing field's really been leveled.
Frankly, neither will be so dramatically better at one function than the other to really make the processor the deciding factor anymore. The rest of the components will really be what determines system performance. So these kinds of polls don't really tell you anything. -
Yeah for laptop I voted Intel due to there Core duo which is out, however it's not 64bit compatible
-
I wouldnt worry about incompatibiltiy 64 bit.
It is not common today, maybe it takes 2-3 years from now. By then it's about time we buy new lappy as technology will be so advance compare to today. -
Intel for me. Easy choice. They have the best CPUs out right now.
64-bit is useless to 99.99999% of us at this time... and it will remain that way for years. -
Only reason I didn't vote AMD now, is due to issues finding their higher clocked Turion X2's on the market just yet. But that's quickly being resolved. Intel's Core Duo isn't "better" than a Turion X2, except for the fact that there's availability of higher clocked models. Similar clock comparisons will yield ballpark performance. -
I prefer Intel because of their Centrino platform. Intel have really excelled in producing the energy efficient chipset.
AMD still have a fair way to go. One advantage of AMD for the mpbile market is that they have already produced 64 bit processors. -
No. Check CNET, they have a comparison of Core Duo and Turion X2 processors and the Core Duo's are leading by 20% I think. By August AMD will be out of the game when it comes to performance in laptops with Core 2 Duo taking the spotlight (much like Core Duo is #1 in laptops now. -

AMD is going to be out of the game until next year; until then, they will have to rely on the 'street cred' they have built up over the last few years with the Athlon 64 line.
I prefer Intel right now for laptops; their Core microarchitecture is really spectacular with regards to power consumption and performance. -
Amd in a desktop no doubt but I think Intel still has the lead in the laptop market.
-
i'm using a AMD sempron 2.6 cheap laptop, i don't care of what brand of cpu because i don't use it much. Intel almost dominate all mobile cpu in the market, users or customers will choose this more than AMD. Seem to be the users don't care about the 64bit or not much in a AMD 64 bit cpu as long as they feel happy, good stylish design, better video graph chip.....
-
The only other comparisons I've found are from matbe with Asus A6's and PresencePC with MSI's 12 inchers.
Seems performance is fairly close other than with games. The Core Duo pulls ahead in games in the matbe article, but the gap would be a lot smaller in actual gaming situations since you aren't going to be playing at 640x480. And comparing integrated graphics, the GMA950 will get pulverised by both the integrated X200 and go6150.
The PresencePC tests actually had the TurionX2 getting better battery life under the the light load of normal usage.
Availability is why I would choose Intel. Up here in Canada, I don't think you can even find any Turion X2 laptops, Acer will probably be the first to get some in. If they were available, I'd have no problems going AMD if they were the same price as a comparable Core Duo. -
I have a Pentium M at work and this Turion 64 for home. Being the nut behind the machine, I really don't find that much difference in daily operations like email, Office docs, and general web surfing.
Overall, I don't think the average user cares about the chip...they just want the computing job done. -
Intel by a long ways, cause for all their 64bit crap, AMD has higher power consumption, lower performance, and DDR memory. Also, Intel is coming with the 64bit merom this september.
-
Definitly Intel. Intel has WAY higher clocked cpus... That is what I care about most..
-
-
Well, i care about decent performance & affordable price. Though I use Intel core duo at present, i will choose AMD in near future for that reason.
-
I also voted Intel. Their power/watt ratio can't be beaten at the moment.
-
For laptops, I must say Intel. They just have the better overall power/watt ratio like TedJ said.
AMD isn't too, too far behind, but Intel just has their foot down in the mobile market.
Again with the 64-bit talk. Right now it IS useless to us all. When Vista comes out next year we will see. What you ask? We will have to wait and see how many software companies are going to actually produce 64-bit apps and whether these apps in 64-bit will be that much different from what we're using now.
Yes numbers matter somewhat, but will the end-user FEEL a difference? In word processing and spreadsheets I will have to say no freakin' way, but in other applications that are process dependent, yes.
64-bit isn't as big of a deal as the manufacturers have made it out to be. I think even after Vista's release 64-bit isn't going to matter much until about 1.5-2 years later.
That's my guess. -
Intel > AMD - 6-27-06
-
For a desktop i would choose AMD (until the Gread Intel Core 2 Duo)
For a notebook i would choose Intel (best Performance/watt ratio) ahem the Core 2 Duo! -
i like AMD...i had a celeron laptop before and speed step is nice...the downfall for intel to me is cost and there weak intergated GPU
if you have a crap load of money....yes...intel is better....but if your budget tight...AMD with there intergrated GPUs from ATI and Nvidia -
AMD. Floating point intensive work means AMD. Maybe with Merom it will change. But not so far.
-
-
Dunno why people are saying AMD are better for desktops, thats true for the likes of P4 VS A64, but Intels new Conroe blows the FX series right out of the water and trashes it in nearly every game by a decent margin.
In fact even a Pentium D processor with x20 multiplier can overclock to FX speeds and it only costs 130 dollars or thereabouts.
As for laptops, as the moment intel offer the best solution, but if AMD don't get something out to rival Conroe (am2 is slower), Intel will actually be the gamers choice of cpu for both desktop and laptop.
Intel are really getting back into the game big style!! -

Intel for laptops
AMD for desktops
for now :| -
Another vote for Intel... But I'd still consider AMD in the future.
-
AMD = gaming
Intel = serious work
I would consider AMD if it weren't for their subpar performance and shoddy battery life compared to Intel counterparts. -
I vote for Intel for Laptop. AMD is in my Desktop for gaming .I do not know for how long,The Intel chips coming out soon look really good.
AMD or Intel? For the Laptop.
