I'm trying to pick out the cheapest, best parts on Newegg for a decent gaming computer, and I was just wondering which is the better choice: Intel or AMD quad core CPU's. I'm guessing the Phenoms are cheaper, but are they any worse than the Intel quads? My number one priority was a Geforce GTX260, so I probably won't even need a whole lot of CPU power anyway.

EDIT: Notebook review, right. my bad.. heading over to desktop review now

You can get a GTX 275 for $280 which uses a smaller nm process which will result in more performance for the money and less heat.
But I would have to tell you Intel has been spanking AMD's butt ever since dual cores came about 3-4 years ago. An Intel Core i7 920 at 2.4ghz for about $230 will smoke the fastest and most expensive AMD CPU out right now. I would say Intel hands down and would suggest for you to get a i7 CPU if it can fit within your budget. Otherwise aim for a CPU with at least a 1066mhz FSB as these chips smoke the 800mhz chips.

Actually the amd athlon 64 x2 was faster then the pentium D so no intel hasent been better since dual cores

    Seconded. :p

For what it's worth, though, the Intel Core i7 processors are simply the best of the best. The AMD Phenom II quads are cheaper, but not quite as good. They're more comparable to the Intel Core 2 Quad series.

And tippey's right about the Pentium dual-cores; they were basically crap. I was unfortunate enough to own a desktop with an E2200.

An Intel Core i7 920 $280 if it is on sale, if you can afford it and the x58 motherboard + DDR3 memory required to use it, go for it.

Otherwise, an AMD Phenom II X4 955 costs $245, will work in AM2+ or AM3 boards (meaning DDR2 OR DDR3 memory), and beats Intel's Q9550, which costs $270.

AMD competes well with Intel at every price point, so you'll notice none of them cost more than $245 dollars, while Intel's processors can cost as much as $1000. If you go Intel, go for the i7 920, or skip them entirely and just get AMD.

basically he said it all, AMD's recent stuff is supposed to compete with the Core 2 lineup, not i7, so if your on a budget AMD all the way, no reason to go with Intel unless your going i7.

The highest scoring 3dmark06 desktop was an AMD quad core..
