Intel's massive 18-core Core i9 chip starts a bloody battle for enthusiast PCs-Pcworld.com
"Intel and AMD have a real fight going again, and we’ll have to wait and see who’ll end up on top. With Core i9, Intel’s just staked an aggressive claim to the high end of the market. AMD will now be forced to disclose the 14, 12, and 10-core versions of its Threadripper parts, as well as their prices. Intel’s laid down its cards, but the hand has yet to be played."
Overclocking is a huge focus
Not surprisingly, Intel’s not recommending that the new X-series parts be air-cooled. Instead, the company will sell the TS13X cooler, designed for the 165 watts and 140 watts of thermal design power heat the new chips will dissipate.
-
Does Intel even have Alpha hardware for these things? Will Intel now need to introduce their own CCX CPU's with these? Will the new CPU's fit into the same socket even if the same chipset as the lower core variants?

For a laptop, that should be an awesome machine for productivity. Sorry we non gamer's can drool too.

@Papusan - Intel slide on pricing. This is the beat:
I'm rather unimpressed and feel the 12-core will match the AMD flagship on pricing. If AMD does the 10-core versus the 16-core on pricing, Intel will really feel the pain! Especially with the base on the 16-core being 3.5, meaning as the cores go up on Intel, it will be harder and harder to match the ThreadRipper offerings. But, just 16 more hours before the AMD event, approximately!

Interesting article just loaded to HardOCP (they overclocked all CPUs to their max):
https://www.hardocp.com/article/2017/05/26/definitive_amd_ryzen_7_realworld_gaming_guide/1
Ryzen 7 about as good as overclocked i7-2600K for gaming. Main two takers are though: 1) If you're gonna do an AMD CrossFire GPU setup do not use Ryzen, i7-7700K gave a huge significant increase in framerates across the board. 2) If you've got a 144Hz monitor don't get Ryzen, go i7-7700K instead. We knew Point #2 already I think.triturbo likes this. -
At least 8 months to reign supreme. Even then it is not unlike them to release in tiers so it may be a while before we see those top end bin products. By then alot can happen on the AMD side and the war may still yet continue.
I think they should do a sever undercut, make Intel lower the 6950 to chump change. It serves them right for charging us top dollar when they have been holding back on any real advancements till now. -

So, there are many strategic reasons to do this aside from thinking short term margin. This is to really take the win.

So, the board has 64 PCIe lanes instead of the 44 on the X299. Did the rumors get the number of PCIe lanes wrong? Could AMD have 20 lanes over Intel? Only 12 hours to find out!

It's exciting to read, but the reality isn't anywhere close to this.
A new processor isn't dreamt up overnight. This isn't Intel's response to threadripper... and AMD won't disclose 10, 12 and 14 core versions either - if they weren't planned for months already...
Intel is already lowering the prices vs. what was previously charged... this isn't Intel suggesting to AMD what to price anything. It is properly communicating with it's intended customers (most, of whom are not in this thread/forum, btw...).
If AMD has the hardware to compete with Intel and decides to give it's work away for pennies on the dollar; I weep for them. That is not a sustainable business model... nor a platform I or any of my colleagues would give real $$$$ for...
AMD needs to price their products fairly for the performance offered - anything less will win them online friends for now - but in the long run will also bankrupt them too (again...).
Yeah; we do have a fight again and I welcome it. AMD has made huge steps to becoming a real contender (but don't let that fool you into thinking it is pushing Intel around even a little, yet).
Winning the next dozen battles or more won't determine a winner in my mind. 2020 to 2022 is when I'll be re-evaluating what is offered by both and taking a serious look at their past few years and how they addressed any problems or concerns - that will be worth more to me than even a 50% CPU price cut or a 20% performance improvement (for either side).
All this posing and showing of limited 'specs' is rather entertaining right now. But nothing you can rely on for a $2K decision... let alone anything that starts multiplying exponentially beyond that (for multiple workstations).
When I can get actual Intel and AMD platforms that 'should' be effectively similar in most respects and within $500 of each other (on a $3.5K platform...) - then I can begin to decide which way to jump.
Right now? Theory, IPC spreads and the endless rumor mill is all anybody has to feed this multicore dream (at the consumer level, at least).

Hopefully they will do a preview at the OC competition like they did for the X299 last night! Potentially over 5Ghz on 16-cores!

If the Threadripper does do 5 GHz then it is over for Intel at least in the short term. Now if it requires liquid Nitrogen, that is another story.

Asinine comment on the "Right off the bat then, the specs turn out to be quite interesting. Instead of using Intel chips, the system will be powered by a selection of AMD processors, from the 7th-gen quad-core AMD A10-9700 APU on the low end to the more-powerful 3.8-GHz AMD Ryzen 7 1700 CPU on the high end. The choice of AMD’s processors makes sense for the low-end configuration given the budget pricing, while at the higher-end it’s an interesting show of faith on Dell’s part (though equally likely, they want to use the same motherboard throughout the line)." But, putting the snark aside, it is a shame on the GPU selection, but overall solid build for the pre-built mid-range ODM market. Dell getting on board is a good start. Let's see what else may come.

Looks like Ryzen is making it to laptops now. With 8 cores and 16 threads to boot.
Specs are:
https://www.techpowerup.com/live/images/Computex_2017/asus_002.jpg
Even though it lists just 4GB VRAM, I don't see a reason why they can't go for the 8GB one. Looking forward to a Ryzen/Vega combo one, even though I probably won't be able to afford it haha.
EDIT: The RX580 is only 65 watts so I'm guessing they had to downclock it.Last edited: May 30, 2017hmscott likes this. -

Pricing is out but until the hardware is available it may not affect the pricing of the ThreadRipper. AMD also needs to consider the cost of the main boards as well as these go into consideration when deciding a platform build. I anticipate the x399 boards may be priced higher as for the socket and extra PCI-e lanes and capabilities etc..

Potentially over 5GHz on 16 cores - maybe. But a little hard to do without an actual CPU populating the socket.

So, for those that follow benches, the demo of X299 last night gave 8 world records and 23 first place positions.
Let's see if AMD takes some back. That event used liquid helium, showing no or little cold bug/cold boot bug. Tonight may hold so much fun! ;-)

Boring stuff, Epyc, Vega Instinct and now OEM's. Waiting for the good stuff. My one question watching this is how did Intel get so caught off guard? I mean their road maps would have been allot different to begin with if they anticipated such competition. As it is now they seem to reactive to a situation.

And here we go on the Asus ROG laptop:
http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/asus-rog-strix-first-ryzen-laptop
Looks like the system I want to get.
1700 (8 core, 16 thread CPU), 580x, etc.
NICE.
I was looking to get a comparable desktop actually.
If this laptop has those specs, I'll be buying that instead.
I think it might be a winner.
EDIT: On a side-note, I would have been ok with 1600 or 1600x as a CPU as well, but both it and 1700 have comparable TDP, except you get 2 more cores (which is always a bonus).
Couple that with 580x... and it really is good... but, I hope the 580x is at least properly binned for a laptop (meaning a TDP of about 95W to 110W - comparable to E9550).
I wonder how the cooling in the laptop was thought of.
Question remains on the price of course, but I think these won't necessarily be cheap.
They 'might' be cheaper than comparable units with Intel and Nvidia GTX 1600, but it depends by how much.Last edited: May 30, 2017 -
Suckage, no ThreadRipper release date, benchmarks or prices. Vega for FE has a release date, Vega for Gamer's end of July.
Edit; I am so disappointed. Almost ready to just build an Intel system. All hype for me has been deflated.Last edited: May 30, 2017Ashtrix, Papusan, tilleroftheearth and 2 others like this. -
I am not sure what to think. AMD is playing their cards way to close to their chest. As @TANWare stated, no release date, benchmarks or prices. We won't know about Vega (consumer cards) until the end of July. Something is up...

TBH, way too close. They should had been all over some real world benchmarks at the minimum and some better release dates. I was all hyped as there were supposed to be announcements over Threadripper and Vega and I know no more than before watch th entire presentation. Intel's reactive information is more forthcoming than what they are reacting too.
AMD just lost a major amount of respect from me at the very least. I am sure others that were expecting more are in shock as well.
Edit; 64 PCI-e has been known for a while. You could even see that from the x399 boards etc.. And no they were not violating NDA by showing them early.
Edit 2; you are right to want to know price and timeline. They seemed to be promising anouncements of just that to pull this. I have been Ripping Intel for this same thing, vaporware. if you can't get them out I do not want them. I will wait no longer so my plans now are to build a i9-7900. that should still do me and there is a date and price but that could change if AMD reverses in very short order.Last edited: May 30, 2017 -
I agree, cards way close to the chest. They may want to see Intel performance first with this month's release. But GDI!
Edit: blender test-- TR 13.04 seconds. Ryzen 7 @ 3.4 all cores = 35.57. So some decent scaling, although I want someone with an 8 core Ryzen 7 to download it and run it with the faster clocks and ram to get a better feel.

My point was that the graphic shown was just Photoshopped at 5.05... and, there is literally no CPU in the socket.
-
I held off on a Ryzen setup based on Threadripper and now August or beyond, not happening. Because they are waiting they will loose quite a few potential consumers. I know I am one. If I have to wait till September or October for the supplies to become available for the best parts I may as well wait till end of year for the 18c,36t Intel variant.
My point was again no one expected 5GHz on air, I am sure the graphic was a teaser but who cares as there is nothing at all to back it up.triturbo, Papusan and tilleroftheearth like this. -

So, August will be when some details get released about threadripper? Including when it will actually be released?
TANWare, doesn't look like Intel was caught off guard all that much?
I've made a post elsewhere (sorry, can't seem to track it now) where I state that Intel's so called 'response' to AMD isn't what is seemed.
After all, processors don't take a month or two to design, let alone whole platforms (CPU's, M/B's, Chipsets).
This was coming whether AMD showed up for the dance or not. Did it come earlier than Intel may have wanted? Possibly. But it wasn't whipped up in response to Ryzen nor threadripper, that's obvious. -
$1k-1200 is my tops, which I'm predicting is their top end 16C. The boards are equivalent. So, it is ram support and performance that I want to see. Then not giving that will lose some to the 10-core this month. But, considering 12 and up is what they are shooting for, we'll have to wait and see.
Also, Intel hasn't shown the IPC comparison, which I think they want for better pricing decision. It is just annoying at this point.

tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Depending on which Core model you choose, the IPC comparison will highly favor Intel. With their 1MB per core L2 cache (a 4x increase...) they're expecting 30% over gen 7 models.
But once again: IPC means squat. The platform as a whole is what matters. Can't wait for summer to get here and autumn to be over!
