Do you mean a separate GPU dedicated 2000w PSU. :) I'll call the power company this weekend, I can hear the call now. "Hi, I am calling to have a separate power transformer added to the side of my house."

If you tried to do a 6 card water cooled setup for deep learning, that wouldn't even support the Vega solution!

Edit: lmao! Power company: ok, that will be an extra $250,000 plus line, labor, and a three month waiting period. You must deposit all money in escrow by the end of the week.

Most homes would not be able to support it either. House wiring in general is good for 15 amps a leg, We are talking on 3 cards, without loss, 10 amps alone. So to be honest you need to have a line run for just the system.

I've got 20 amps on 2 rooms, but the other is storage and has nothing pulling from it. So I may be able to slide on 3 cards, but 6, you are right that it needs its own line... Looking at appliance lines (washer/dryer)...

If a room has 20 amps that means it is for lights and any other items. 2 x 100 watt bulbs is 2 amps etc.. if the room has a TV another 3 amps then anything else. 20 amp is better than 15 but still considering then system of 3 cards keep those circuit breakers close.

You guys are nuts. I can't wait to see the builds. I am going with a single card TR build. I think I'm done with multi-GPU setups. I'm going to miss the OC'ing/benchmarking power, however.

MSI: ‘Damn, [RX Vega] needs a lot of power’
    https://videocardz.com/70465/msi-damn-rx-vega-needs-a-lot-of-power
    MSI-on-RX-Vega.png
    which translates to this:

"I’ve seen the specs of Vega RX. It needs a damn lot of power. We’re working on it, which is a start so launch is coming closer :)"

"Since my Dutch is not very good, I had it translated by a friend (thanks!).

This is the first confirmation that AMD is already sharing details of RX Vega lineup with partners. The launch is coming closer as we are still 5 weeks for RX Vega to arrive. However, there is a very good chance we will be seeing custom designs at launch.

As for the power consumption, I don’t think anyone expected it to be lower than Frontier’s, which has a board power of 300W (air-cooled) or 375W (liquid edition).

Many thanks to kinger9119 for the tip!

Are we discussing information on Epyc and Threadripper here too, or do we need another thread?

Some discussion of Epyc is to be expected in this thread as it pertains to its Ryzen siblings. Threadripper is a Ryzen CPU and yes, Epyc is arguably in the Ryzen family too.

64 per CPU, totaling 128, the same as a 1P system.

Also, there are only 4 CPUs of the lineup released, with the rest available late July. This is very widely known information, yet you twist it. What a joke!

I thought I was providing facts. Thanks for correcting me for the PCIe lanes...

There are NO Epyc CPU's available today from Silicon Mechanics; kinda defeats the statement of 'available immediately', eh?

Actually, silicon mechanics said available immediately, but if you customize the server, then there is a waiting period. There is a difference and that difference is important!

So I just tried and saw that as well. Then I noticed it was spec'ed with 7251 models, which were not the ones released yet. Only the top 4 skus were released and that model is toward the bottom of the stack. So that explains a little bit more on what is going on...

I checked on my phone, so I didn't verify all models, rather just one. So, that may be true. I do not know if they offer to choose a higher cpu, or what is going on, considering the article, so there must be some disconnect somewhere. Also, they may be offering the hardware for sell now and the cpu for later availability, which is late July for that model. But, I cannot comment until I look into it more.

But I did need to apologize as I was going off of the article and didn't check the site proper. Thank you for bringing that to my, and everyone's, attention!

You release a press release of an immediate availability on a product and yet it's not immediately available. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't show synergy between the marketing and production teams at Silicon Mechanics. Anyway, we have requested a few samples.

So, to put this into perspective, Vega uses 20% more power (300W being 50W higher than Nvidia), while getting 15-50% higher scores, depending on the task...

I think we all suspected that getting better performance than Pascal, already running hotter than Maxwell, was going to take another bump up in power and thermals.

Nvidia's going to have the same problem with Volta. :newpalm:

Consider you have ibm's 7nm talking 40%+ transistor performance or 60% more energy efficient, then you have TSMC's 7nm which is 30% transistor improvement and 65% energy efficiency, both AMD and Nvidia are set for next gen products. Nvidia tipped their hand and showed Volta is going bigger die. AMD may do the same, or they will use IF or IF2 with smaller dies linked to disperse heat, while using the HBCC and direct die links to help with latency and memory access. 7nm will have around 50% more transistors in a given area. So, no matter what, we are looking at a good jump in performance in late 2018-2019.

Also, if they went the multi-die route and memory on the chip, as expected, I wonder if they will put an IHS soldered to help with after-market cooling and with the memory interposers which could be crushed. Depending on how it's done, that could work for nice, solid contact with a cold plate of a water cooler.

Seems a little dramatic, more likely there's a figurative pendulum between them and it's AMD's turn on both sides. I fully expect it to swing back at some point and continue until something completely off the rails happens.

Nah, we need more levity in these threads, easier if I just pay more attention.

    The EPYC Icebox

Notice how they installed the Epyc CPU's on site - hand carried them - so they couldn't get stolen in transit :)

The internal views went by so fast, but I don't think they included a shot of the CPU(s) with the Cooler installed...

Yeah, no CPU's or coolers. I definitely have some room in the basement if they want to build me a free one down there. :)

Links; (I do think the CPU was locked at 2.2 GHz (5446/2.2x2.75=6807))
