Hi everyone. I got a ASUS F8SN with 3 GB of RAM, and I am wondering if I upgrade my RAM to 4 gb, would DDR2 800mhz be compatible? And would there be increase in performance?

I currently have Vista 32-bit installed. I play games like Counter-Strike: Source, World of Warcraft, Crysis (Medium setting, works ok), and plan on playing Warhammer Online.

The brand of RAM I planned to get is Mushkin, OCZ, or Crucial. I just basically want to know if 800mhz RAM is compatible with the F8SN, and would there be performance increase (like with desktop counter-part with low latency gaming RAM; the brand, the speed, and the extra 1 gb ram size) compared to the stock 3gb RAM that came with the laptop.

Is this worth it, or a waste of my time and money? (I plan on locally selling my old ram for maybe $20-$30)

    Don't bother upgrading to 4GB.

Reason --> Vista 32 won't recognise the full 4GB (2.5-3.75GB). You need Vista 64 for 4GB RAM and above.

You should check whether Vista 32 is recognizing the full 3GB or not. Go in TaskMgr --> Performance --> Total Physical Memory = (??)

And RAM will not run at 800MHz (667MHz max)....

    Task Manager > Performance > Physical Memory (MB) Total = 3070. Is that the full memory? 1024mb x 3 = 3072.

I think mine is a stick of 1 gb, and a stick of 2 gb.

Also I read somewhere; what's downclocking?

What Andy said. 800Mhz on your system will only run at 667Mhz (downclock). Also when you mix DIMMs of different speeds the faster downclocks to the speed of the slower.

800Mhz should work but not at that speed.

    Thats fine....
But no sense in upgrading to 4GB, unless you have Vista 64.

    Downclocking
    .... :p
