    Hi all,
I just got my new U36JC notebook from ASUS and I'm trying to boot an alternate OS (Ubuntu) from the USB 3.0 port without luck.. has anyone encountered this as well?

When I connect my thumb drive (super talent USB 3.0 express) I am able to boot from both of the USB 2.0 ports, but when I try booting from the usb 3.0 port (hit ESC during boot) I just don't have the option in the boot menu to boot from this device.

Tried contacting asus, they didn't really help me, I think that 10 year old kids work there... also tried updating to the latest bios version.

I think that the usb 3.0 port is connected to a PCI express slot on the MB and maybe it does not support booting from it?

Any help / info would be really appreciated!!!

    Thanks!

Until USB 3.0 becomes native on chipset, it will probably not be bootable. All current implementations of USB 3.0 use separate controllers or daughter boards to run the USB 3.0, and those drivers aren't loaded until after OS startup, which is why you can't boot from them (there's no driver for it until after the OS is already loaded).

Thanks Judicator! I just confirmed it with asus..
Too bad though... it could have been great being able to boot from the usb 3.0 port..
Maybe in the future Asus could provide a bios upgrade to solve this issue.

    I really appreciate your help!

BIOS upgrade won't really help; it is, unfortunately, a hardware issue that would require parts replacement.
