Hello all Happy Thanksgiving, i have a question.
My laptop fan has just gone haywire this morning when i booted it, it was working fine and still is working fine, the problem is the fan making so much noise. It's so loud to the point where i cant hear a television or other people talking over it. It went from silent to this in one night. I have tried opening the bottom and cleaning the fan out with a spray can, but still no luck. The fan continually makes noise from when the laptop boots, the fan occasionally stops for a few minutes and then starts up again.
I have bought my laptop from XoticPC.com and i have contacted them, but i thought i'd post on this forum too, to see what you guys think i should do? Has this happened to anyone, what did you do to resolve it? I don't have access to other computers and want to go through the minimal amount of downtime possible.
Thanks for the replies and help!

Have you looked at your temperatures? Download HWMonitor.
-
yeah, i've been using hwmonitor and they are hovering around 42-55 celsius.
-
Is it still under warranty? I'd say there is something wrong with the motherboard. I'm surprised it boots though. I have had something similar happen to my Dell XPS 420, where I could turn it on, and the fan would go mad, and there would be absolutely nothing on screen.

i have no idea about the warranty, doesn't it have a standard 2 yr warranty when you purchase an ASUS from xoticpc.com,
anyways its not so much of going maddness/haywire fan, it's just really LOUD and chunky, it's settling down at times, and when i think the problem has gone away, it slowly comes back. -

Hmmm, to me (from across the continent
), it sounds like your fan's bearings are gone. A simple fan switch is all you should need.

is this something that i can do at home after ordering a internal fan? i opened the back when i was cleaning the fan out, and the copper cooling bar that runs to the processor is going through the fan.
*EDIT* by the way i just got a laptop cooling fan: running hwmonitor with a laptop cooling fan atm, dont have many programs open so i wanted to provide a base temperature avg when computer is idle. my temperatures are as follows:
ACPI temp: THRM - 50 cels, 121 F. min 48 cels, 118 F max 51 cels, 123 F
Intel Mobile Core2 Duo temp: Core#0 - 42 cels, 107 F min 38 cels, 100 F max 43 cels, 109 F
Core#1 - 42 cels, 107 F min 38 cels, 100 F max 43 cels, 109 F
GeForce 9700M GT temp: GPU Core - 51 cels, 123 F min 47 cels, 116 F max 55 cels, 130 F -

Seems then that it is part of the CPU cooling system (heat-pipe).
You could call up Asus and see how much they'll sell you that part (I'm pretty sure you'd want it complete - instead of wanting to reuse parts from your current 'broken' one).
Or, you could search eBay too.
I'm wondering if something hasn't gotten into the fan that is making it screech? A hair or fiber that has wound itself around the motor spindle?
Good luck. -
hey, thanks for the input! much appreciated. will think of what to do. the noise hasnt returned in a day or two and the laptop cooling rack is working nicely, i will return mail to xoticpc customer service and see what they suggest.
thanks

Asus will charge you as much as they want, so don't expect the price to be reasonable. eBay is your best bet.

Bog, he may have a warranty, but it won't hurt to ask Asus and compare to what eBay offers (at least he'll know the maximum to bid).
sOm_jungi, maybe you could tell us what the ambient, or room temperatures were when you posted those temperatures above.
To me, they look reasonable, but the ambient temperature may be playing a part too.
BTW, I always use a notebook cooler - no crashes and hands don't feel like I was playing with coals!
