Friend has an old laptop with an RS480M chipset and she wants to upgrade her cpu. I've been trying to figure out what processors are compatible but I'm not really sure. I've seen that "Mobile Athlon 64" and "Turion 64" processors are compatible.. So would it be fair to say that the MT-40 is the fastest processor available for this chipest? Or maybe Mobile Athlon 64 4000+?

BIOS support for other CPUs is the key to this: Unless CPU support is well documented on the manufacturer's website, you need to find out what CPUs were offered on the notebook.

[I have a desktop with this chipset on an MSI motherboard. I put in an Athlon 64x2 CPU and discovered it was using only one core. I then discovered that MSI had never got round to adding x2 support to their BIOS. Fortunately, I found that HP had a desktop that used the same motherboard and HP had updated their BIOS. So my desktop computer now thinks it is HP!]

There's a review on this very website with the Athlon 4000+ processor in her computer model so it should work.. just trying to figure out if it will support anything better. It doesn't look like it though.

Any benefit of getting the Turion over the Athlon? Heat? Reliability?

    Well put.

As an example, I have the RS480M chipset in one of my lappys and it is running a S754 Mobile Sempron 3300+. Even though this unit's socket would be a physical fit for a S754 Mobile Athlon64 4000+, it would never run because it is lacking the mfrg's BIOS support and power requirements for such a cpu.
